Effect of Low Temperature on Photosynthesis, Grain Growth and Yield of Five Aman Rice Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five rice varieties viz,. Binasail, Binadhan-4, Binadhan-7, Binadhan-11 and Binadhan-12 were evaluated in plant growth chamber under low temperature (20^oC) at tillering, panicle initiation, booting and flowering stage. Low temperature at different growth stages affected yield and yield attributes of the rice varieties. However, low temperature at flowering stage decreased grain yield more and found more critical. Grain dry weight, chlorophyll content and photosynthesis were decreased by low temperature. During grain growth period, grain dry weight gradually increased but photosynthesis in flag leaf decreased from anthesis to maturity. The highest grain dry weight and photosynthetic rate was found in Binadhan-7.

Objectives:

To assess the effect of low temperature at different growth stages on yield and yield attributes of rice varieties and to find out low temperature tolerant variety

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted with five rice varieties viz., Binasail, Binadhan-4, Binadhan-7, Binadhan-11 and Binadhan-12 in plant growth chamber at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during July to December 2014. Five temperature treatments viz., Ambient, 20^oC at tillering, 20^oC at panicle initiation, 20^oC at booting and 20^oC at flowering stage were applied for 7 days at each respective growth stage and then plants were allowed to grow it ambient temperature up to maturity. Separately two temperature treatments (Ambient and 20^oC) from flowering to maturity were maintained for grain growth studies. Each pot contained 8 kg of soils. One seedling was transplanted in each pot. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications. Grain dry weight from selected panicles, photosynthesis and chlorophyll content in flag leaf were measured at 3 days' interval from fertilization to maturity. Data on yield and yield attributes were also recorded at maturity. Data were statistically analyzed and Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) compared the means.
