Effect of Water Stress on Photosynthesis, Biochemical Activity, Leaf Water Potential and Yield of Rice Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Six aromatic rice genotyps viz., Binadhan-13, BRRI dhan34, Ukunimadhu, Kalizira and NERICA were evaluated under control (100% FC) and water stress (30% FC) at BINA, Mymensingh during July to December 2014. The water stress treatmnts were imposed at tillering, panicle initiation and grain filling stages and discontinued when the specific stage was over. Separately the above treatments were maintained during flowering to maturity. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design with three replications. Water stress significantly decreased grain dry weight, photosynthesis, chlorophyll content, relative water content but increased proline and sugar content in leaves. Binadhan-13 produced the highest grain yield followed by NERICA under water stress.

Objectives:

To assess the effects of water stress on photosynthesis, biochemical activity, leaf water potential and yield of rice genotypes and to find out stress tolerant genotype

Methodology:

A pot experiment was carried out with six aromatic rice genotypes viz., Binadhan-13, BRRI dhan34, Ukunimadhu, RM-100-16, Kalizira and NRICA at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during July to December 2014. Control and water stress (30% FC) treatment were imposed at tillering, panicle initiation and grain filling stages and discontinued when the specific stage was over. Separately, the above treatments were imposed during flowering to maturity for grain growth studies. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design with three replications. Thirty-day old seedling were transplanted in pot containg 8 kg of soils pot^-1on 22 July 2014. Data on relative water content and leaf water potential were measured at panicle initiation stage. Nitrate reductase activity, proline and sugar contents were measured at grain growth stage. Grain dry weight of 10 grains from selected panicles, chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate were measured at 3 days interval from fertilization to maturity. Data on yield and yield attributes were also recorded at maturity. Data were statistically analyzed and Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) compared the means.
