Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Planned animal health and good flock management packages is very important to maintain the optimal animal health and production. The study was conducted to explore the disease status of sheep in Bangladesh. Information on the disease related factors and samples (feces, blood etc.) were collected from the diseased /dead animal from 11 selected areas of Bangladesh. Fecal and blood samples were examined to determine the parasitic loads and protozoan infection, respectively. Especial attempts were made to develop herbal based novel approaches to treat and control major intestinal helminthic infestations of sheep. Antibiotic resistance and sensitivity studies of the etiological agents responsible for common infectious diseases in sheep were also conducted. The study findings revealed high incidence of GIT parasitic infection, diarrhea, pneumonia, PPR and foot rot as the major disease problems of sheep populations in Bangladesh. Relatively higher occurrence of parasitic infection in sheep was recorded in rainy season (97.41 %) than the summer (91.33%) and winter (82.35%) season. The parasitic was infection was found as a major cause of diarrhea in sheep. The herbal extracts (Mahogany, Betel leaf, Dodder, Bitter guard, Turmeric etc.) exhibited anti-helminthic effects in a dose dependent manner and all the worms were found dead within 6 hours post-exposure.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The study was conducted in 11 selected areas of Bangladesh where the CINSCCF project was implemented. A total of 334 sheep were examined for helminthic infection. Information on the disease related factors like health status, sex and age, vaccination, deworming etc. were collected. Samples (feces, blood etc.) were collected from the diseased /dead animal and preserved following the standard procedure. Fecal samples were examined following the standard procedure to determine the parasitic loads and fecal as well as blood samples were examined following the standard procedure to determine any protozoan infection present in the study animals. Samples from diarrheic animal were studied to isolate and identify causal organism. Since helminthic infections, diarrhea and pneumonia were found to be the mostly occurring health hazards in sheep of all ages, especial attempts were made to develop herbal based novel approaches to treat and control major intestinal helminthic infestations of sheep. Antibiotic resistance and sensitivity studies of the etiological agents responsible for common infectious diseases in sheep were also conducted in order to suggest the most suitable antibiotic to treat the concerned diseases in the field.

Achievement/Findings:

The study findings revealed high incidence of GIT parasitic infection, diarrhea, pneumonia, PPR and foor rot as the major disease problems of sheep populations in Bangladesh. Around 89.5% sheep were found infected with one or more species of helminth parasites (229 out of 334 sheep). Relatively higher occurrence of parasitic infection in sheep was recorded in rainy season (97.41 %) than the summer (91.33%) and winter (82.35%) season. Prevalence of helminths in sheep was significantly higher in young sheep (89.27%) than in adult (81.11%) and in lamb (72.41%). Female (91.61%) sheep were found more susceptible than there male counter (78.24%). The parasitic was infection was found as a major cause of diarrhea in sheep. The herbal extracts (Mahogany, Betel leaf, Dodder, Bitter guard, Turmeric etc.) exhibited anti-helminthic effects in a dose dependent manner and all the worms were found dead within 6 hours post-exposure.
