An experiment was conducted consecutively for two jute-growing seasons in three important jute growing areas of Bangladesh to study the impact of different components of technology such as Improved seed, Line sowing, Balanced fertilizer, Timely weeding-planting and intercultural operation, Insect-pest and disease control, Improved drainage condition for comparison with the farmer’s practices. Results revealed that farmer’s practice was always significantly inferior to that of improved practice even when any single component was excluded from the improved technology. For example, 33 percent yield increment obtained over farmer’s practice when improved seed (HYV) component excluded from improved practice i.e., using framer’s seed (local) with the other components of improved practice. Similarly, 19, 8, 12, 23, 26 percent of yield increment obtained when line sowing, balanced fertilizer use, timely weeding-planting and intercultural operation, insect-pest and disease control and improved drainage condition components are excluded from improved practice respectively i.e., using farmer’s practice in place of these components of improved practice.

To determine the impact of component technologies in jute production.

The experiments were conducted in 3 major jute growing areas of Bangladesh viz., Faridpur, Kishoregonj and Rangpur in two consecutive jute growing seasons. The soil characteristics of the locations were as summarized in table 1. Table 1. Soil characteristics of the experimental locations Parameter Locations Faridpur Kishoreganj Rangpur Soil texture Soil series Soil ph Organic matter (%) Loam Gopalganj 7.6 to 8.0 0.5 to 1.0 Loam Shilmondi 5.3 to 6.9 0.5 to 1.5 Silty loam Gangachara 6.0 to 6.5 0.5 to 1.0 Source : Soil Science Division, BJRI, Dhaka- 1207. There were eight treatments including two controls namely; farmer’s practice and improved practice. Improved practice includes; (i) improved seed: high yielding olitorius jute seed O-9897 developed by BJRI, (ii) line sowing : jute seed sown in line 30cm apart in place of broadcasting usually done by farmers, (iii) balanced fertilizer: using fertilizer for high yield goal as per soil type according to “Fertilizer Recommendation Guide-1977” published by Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council, (iv) timely planting-weeding and intercultural operation: planting in time with irrigation without delaying for monsoon shower, weeding-thinning and other intercultural operations done properly as “Technological Advancement in Jute Cultivation” For example, in this experiment one thinning and two weedings operations were done for all the treatments except farmer’s practice, (v) insect-pest and disease control: immediate measures should be done as and when insect-pest or disease infestation observed. In this experiment, yellow mite infestation was controlled with lime-sulphur (ratio 1:2) spray twice at the time span of 40 hours, and (vi) improved drainage condition: immediate removal of standing water very much necessary for jute field. In this experiment, excess rain water at the end of July drained out with making furrow drains 60cm apart with hand hoe. In six treatments other than control, single component of improved technologies mentioned above was excluded one by one from the improved technology package. The experiments were laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications in 6m×4m unit plot size. Line to line spacing was 30cm and that of plot to plot was 60cm. Seeds were sown in 3rd week of March. The variety of seed was local for farmer’s practice and O-9897 for other treatments including improved technology. Input use and management practices were followed as described in “ Technological advancement in jute cultivation, BJRI” (3) Fiber yield data with yield contributing characters viz. plant height (PH) and plant base diameter (BD) were taken and biometric analysis were done following Hasanuzzaman et. al.

The findings of the study conclusively proved that improved jute production technology package as a whole or even exclusion of any one of its component provided significantly higher fibre yield compared to farmer’s practice. Therefore, based on the location specific findings, on-farm trials are to be conducted to investigate agro-economical feasibility and adoption performances of the technologies at farmer’s condition in order to packaging the technologies for greater agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh.
