Integrated Nutrient Management for Tomato Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the MLT site, Dumuria during 2011- 12 to find out the suitable combination of organic and inorganic fertilizer for tomato production in the saline soils of coastal areas. The experiment was conducted in RCB design with 3 replications. Four different nutrient management treatments were studied viz. T₁: Soil test based fertilizer dose for HYG as per Fertilizer Recommendation Guide-2005, T₂: JPNS with 3t ha^-1 poultry manure for HYG, T₃: IPNS with 5 t ha^-1 CD for HYG and T₄: Farmers' practice. Twenty five day old seedlings of tomato (BARI tomato 14) were tramplanted on 05 November, 2011. The yield and yield components of tomato were significantly influenced by different nutrient management packages. The IPNS treatment with 3 t ha^-1 poultry manure (T₂) produced the highest fruit yield of tomato (93.33 t ha^-1), which was followed by IPNS treatment with 5 t ha^-1 cow dung (T₃) treatment.

Objectives:

To find out the suitable combination of organic and inorganic fertilizer for tomato production in the saline soils of coastal areas.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at the MLT site, Dumuria during 2011-12 to find out the suitable combination of organic and inorganic fertilizer for tomato production. The experiment was conducted in RCB design with 3 replications. Organic matter content or soils of thc experimental field was found low (1.80%). The fertilizer doses were selected on the basis of target yields as per Fertilizer Recommendation Guide- 2005. Treatment combinations were- i) T₁: Soil test based fertilizer dose for HYG as per fertilizer recommendation guide 2005 (N₁₁₆P₃₃K₅₄S₆B_0.5), T₂: IPNS with 3 t ha^-1 poultry manure for HYG (N_81.5P_1.5K_3.3S₆B_0.5+3 t ha^-1 poultry manure), T₃: IPNS with 5 t ha^-1 CD for HYG (N₉₄P_25.5K₂₉S₆ B_0.5+5 t ha^-1 CD), and T₄: Farmers' practice (N₁₂₀P₄₂K₅₀ +3 t ha^-1 CD). Unit plot size was 1.2 m x 2.8 m. Twenty five day old seedlings of tomato (var. BARI tomato 14) were transplanted on 05 November 2011. The data on different plant characters and yield components were collected from 10 plants selected at random from each plot and analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

IPNS based fertilizer dose (N_81.5P_1.5K_3.3S₆B_0.5+3 t ha^-1 poultry manure) for HYG (T₂) was found the best combination among the four fertilizer packages studied for the production of tomato in the coastal areas of Khulna.
