Screening of BARI Released Tomato Varieties in Coastal Saline Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the MLT site, Dumuria during 2011-12 to find out the suitable tomato varieties for coastal saline area. The experiment was conducted in RCB design with 3 replications. Ten tomato varieties viz. BARl tomato 2, BARl tomato 3, BARl tomato 8, BARI tomato 9, BARI tomato 14, BARI hyhrid tomato 3, BARI hybrid tomato 4, BARI hybrid tomato 5, Surakkha and a local variety were taken were studied. Among the varieties BARI hybrid tomato 4 was found to produce the highest yield (61.25 t/ha), while the lowest yield was observe with the local variety (25.00 t/ha).

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the MLT site, Dumuria during 2011-12. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. Ten tomato varieties viz. BARI tomato 2, BARI tomato 3, BARI tomato 8, BARI tomato 9, BARI tomato 14, BARI hybrid tomato 3, BARI hybrid tomato 4, BARI hybrid tomato 5, Surakkha and a local variety were tested in the farmer's field. The unit plot size was 1.2 x 3.2m. The land was fertilized with 150-45-100-20 kg NPKS/ha along with 5 t/ha cow dung. All of cow dung and 1/3rd each of N and K were applied at the final land preparation. The rest of N and K were applied in two equal installments at 21 and 35 DAP. The land was irrigated 3 times and salinity of irrigation water was recorded during the total crop growing period. Weeding and all kinds of intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crop was transplanted on 03 November, 2011 and harvested during 15 February to 07 March, 2012. Data on yield and yield components were collected and analyzed statistically. Means were separated by DMRT.
