Studies on Groundwater Potentials for Some Micro-basins of BINA: Ii. Water Table Fluctuation and Its Response to Rainfall for Sustainable Use.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An attempt was made to study the water-table fluctuation and its response to rainfall at the micro-basins of BINA sub-stations of Ishurdi, Magura, Rangpur, Comilla, Satkhira and BINA head-quarters, Mymensingh. Observation wells were installed earlier at the sub-stations at Ishurdi, Magura, Rangpur, Satkhira and BINA head-quarter at Mymensingh. Using water level indicator, WT data were monitored fortnightly which were then interpreted to see the seasonal as well as yearly WT dynamics. Long-term (1992-2010) water table data were also recorded from earlier installed observation wells at the above locations. It was observe that normally from November to February/March, there was scanty or no rainfall. As a result, the water-table started to decline gradually from October/November to March/April and went below the lifting capacity of suction mode pump (7- 8 m). However, the WT responded to the monsoon rainfall. In Long-term, WT went below the suction limit of STW at Mymensingh. But at Ishurdi, WT was within the suction limit up to 2007 which than had a transition state and it went below the suction limit of STW in 2010. At other locations though data missing but was very much within the suction limit of STW.

Achievement/Findings:

Monthly WT fluctuation pattern in the yearly cycle showed within the suction limit (< 8m) of STW at Rangpur and Magura but it went below the suction limit at Ishurdi. On the other hand at Mymensingh maximum WT sharply went below the suction limit from December and on-ward till the onset of monsoon in June/July. In Long-term WT went below the suction limit of STW at Mymensingh . But at Ishurdi, WT was within the suction limit up to 2003 At other locations though data missing but was very much within the suction limit of STW.
