Studies on Groundwater Potentials for Some Micro-basins of BINA: I. an Assessment of Water Quality for Irrigation.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An attempt was made to investigate the groundwater quality and suitability for its potential use in irrigation purpose at the micro-basins of the BINA (Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture) sub-stations Ishurdi, Magura, Rangpur, Satkhira, Comilla and BINA head-quarters, Mymensingh. The water samples were collected at three distinct seasons as before irrigation period (November), during the peak irrigation period (February/March) and at the end of the irrigation period (May/June) to observe the seasonal effects on the water quality due to the irrigation pumping, monsoon recharge and agricultural practices. Different water quality parameters such as EC, p^H, CO₃^{- -}, HCO3^- , and Cl^-1 were analyzed. Arsenic (As) was also tested using field kit method. Sodium absorption ratio (SAR). Residual sodium carbonate (RSC), Kelley’s ratio (KR), Magnesium adsorption ratio, and Soluble sodium percent were also calculated. Except a few minor discrepancies, almost all the compositions and parameter/indices were found within the acceptable range of crop production. Thus, the groundwater qualities of all the locations under this study were found excellent to good showing no restriction for crop cultivation. However, only some limitations from toxicity problems were observed due to the excessive chlorine content at Satkhira. Therefore, the generated information can be of great help to the groundwater planners and users in selecting crops for irrigation in the study areas.

Objectives:

Achievement/Findings:
