Binamasur-2 : a Gamma Ray Induced Mutant Variety of Lentil (lens Culinaris Medik)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A high yielding variety was developed through gamma irradiation on lentil cultivar Utfala (L-5). Out of 37 M₄ plants, the mutant line ML-30-3 derived from 200 Gy of gamma rays was selected for earliness and high yield. Evaluation of the mutant line was tested along with the check variety under farmers’ field trials at different locations of the country. Mutant ML-30-3 produced the highest seed yield 1996 kg/ha whilst the check variety Barimasur-4 produced 1547kg/ha and matured earlier by 13 days than the check. This mutant line also showed moderately resistant to foot and root rot /wilt and rust diseases. The mutant line ML-30-3 has been released as a commercial cultivar, Binamasur-2 in 2005.

Objectives:

To create variability in lentil through gamma-irradiation and to select desirable high yielding lentil mutant variety with earliness as well as disease resistant.

Methodology:

Two thousand dry seeds of Utfala (L-5) were irradiated with 200, 250 and 300 Gy of gamma rays. The M₁ population was grown at close spacing. The first two pods formed on each M₁ plants were collected considering in mutation experiments as followed by Shaikh and Godward (1974). There were 1500 M₂ plants in each dose. M₂ and M₃ generations were grown in plant-progeny rows with normal spacing and cultural practices. Observation yield trial was conducted with 37 M₄ mutant lines along with their parent, Utfala at Ishurdi during 1995-96. Preliminary, advanced and zonal yield trial were conducted during 1996-97, 1997-98, 1999-2000 and 2000-2001, respectively. The experiments were laid out in a randomized complete block design having unit plot size of 4 m x 0.9 m, 4 x 2.5m and 5 m x 4 m with three replications. Data on plant height, number of primary branches/plant, no. of pods/plant, 100-seed weight, seed yield were recorded. Based on the yield performance of the previous years, four promising mutants E₅M-1018, E₄M-936, ML-30-3 and ML-30-5 along with a check variety Barimasur-4 were put into on farm trials at different locations of Bangladesh during 2002-03 and 2003-04. Replications were three and unit plot size was 10 m x 10 m in each location. Data on some important characters and seed yield/plot were recorded. Plot yield were converted into kilogram (kg) per hectare. Mean differences of different parameters including seed yield were tested by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Steel and Torrie, 1960). Four mutants along with check variety Barimasur-4 were tested against foot and root rot/wilt and rust diseases at BINA sub-station farms Ishurdi, Magura and Rangpur.
