Effect of Different Forms of Urea and Nitrogen Levels on Yield of Three Transplant Aman Rice Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Performance of three modern transplant aman rice varieties, namely, BRRI dhan37, BRRI dhan38 and BRRI dhan39 were evaluated under two forms of urea viz., prilled urea (PU) and urea supergranules (USG) at three levels of nitrogen viz. 80, 120 and 160 kg/ha. USG was deep placed in the middle of four hills in alternate rows at seven days after transplanting, and PU was broadcast in 3 equal splits. Form of urea significantly influenced all the yield attributes. Deep placement of USG gave significantly higher grain yield (4.02 t/ha) and straw yield (6.97 t/ha) than those of split application of PU. BRRI dhan 38 produced the highest grain yield (4.50 t/ha) due to the highest number of effective tillers and 1000-grain weight. BRRI dhan39 gave the lowest grain yield (3.22 t/ha). While BRRI dhan37 produced intermediate grain yield (3.78 t/ha). However. the highest straw yield (8.09 t/ha) was obtained from BRRI dhan37. Grain and straw yields registered an increasing trend up to thc highest level of nitrogen applied (160 kg N/ha). Grain and straw yields were found independent of any of the interactions.

Objectives:

To studying the effect of level of nitrogen and form of urea on the productivity of some modem T. aman rice varieties.

Methodology:

The field trial was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during July to December, 2000 on Old Brahmaputra Floodplain Soils belonging to AEZ-9 with a view to studying the effect of forms of urea and levels of nitrogen on productivity of three modem transplant aman rice varieties. Two forms of urea viz., prilled urea (PU) and urea supergranule (USG) and, three levels of N (kg/ha) viz., 80 (N₈₀), 120 (N₁₂₀) and 160 (N₁₆₀) and three rice varieties viz., BRRI dhan37 (V_I) BRRI dhan38 (V₂) and BRRI dhan39 (V₃). Two, three or four granules of USG (1 g of weight and 11.5mm in diameter) equivalent to 80, 120 and 160 kg N/ha, respectively were placed manually at a depth of 5- 7.5 cm at the centre of four consecutive hills of two adjacent rows at 7 days after transplanting (DAT). Prilied urea @ 80, 120 or 160 kg N ha^-1 were top-dressed in three equal splits at 15 DAT, 30 DAT and 45 DAT. Other fertilizers like triple superphosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate were applied @ 100, 70, 60 and 10 kg/ha, respectively during final land preparation as basal dose. A randomized complete block design with three replications was followed. The unit plot size was 4.0 x 2.5 m. All necessary intercultural operations were done as and when needed. Five hills exciuding boarder rows from each plot were randomly selected, uprooted and properly tagged before harvesting for recording of necessary data. Plot-wise grain and straw yields were recorded at 14% moisture content following the harvesting of the whole plot and converted to t/ha. The collected data were analyzed using the ANOVA and the mean differences were adjudged by the Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

Furthermore, it was observed that those treatment combinations had significant effect on different yield parameters. However. the effect of interaction was not significant on grain yield.
