Growth and Yield Performance of Some Promising Mutants of Lentil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiments were carried out with three advanced mutants along with BARI masur-4 (check) of lentil (Lens culinarirs Medik) for evaluation in respect of earliness, plant height, number of pods per plant and high seed yield. The results showed that all the mutants matured earlier 100-104 (days) by 10-14 days than BARI masur-4, which matured 110-114 days. The highest number of pods (155) was found in LM-30-5. These three mutants along with check variety were put into yield trial in different locations. The mutant LM-30-5 was found out yield all other mutants and check variety in both the locations.

Objectives:

To determine the growth and yield performance at different locations of lentil

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Magura and Rangpur during winter from November 2001 to February 2002. The materials were three advanced lentil mutants lines i.e., LM-30-5, LM-30-3, LM-20-5 and BARI masur-4 variety as check. Three mutants were selected in M₂ generation for earliness and high seed yield potential. These mutants bred true in the later generation for the above characters and their performances were tested from M₂, M₅ generation in different locations of the country. The experiments were laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications where their plot size was 4 X 3 m. Spacing between rows and plants were 30 and 8 cm, respectively. Ten randomly selected plants were taken for data recording. Data on plant height, number of primary branches per plant, days to maturity, number of pods per plants and yield per plot were recorded. Yield was converted into tonnes per hectare. Mean differences of different parameters including seed yield were tested by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Steel and Torries, 190)
