Environmental concerns and economic justice are considered as top of global issues for peaceful survival on this earth. For this reason the environmental degradation is the burning issue around the world. Population boom of Bangladesh urges us in many respects to increase production level for feeding the teeming millions. For this, technological advancement has been occurring in one side and all ones efforts are being made for utilizing the evolved technologies on the other. The improved technologies including fertilizers and pesticides create problems in the soils and environment (Mengel, 1990). For this reason it is necessary to increase environmental knowledge of the farmers about sustainable system to ensure environmental friendly cultivation.Farmers’ develop their technological knowledge by receiving information from different   sources. In this regard personal characteristics of the farmers which influence them to communicate with others are very important. Transfer of technology means the movement of information technology from a research system through an extension system to the client (Kashem and Halim,1991). This transfer of technologies also depends on the access to relevant communication exposure, cosmopolite ness and organizational participation of the farmers and their capabilities and commitment to use the available media in time.

  1. To determine and describe the selected characteristics of farmers’
  2. To determine the environmental knowledge of the farmers.
  3. To explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of the farmer and their environmental knowledge.

Burichang upazila of comilla district was selected as the study area. Out of 512 farmers (population)100 farmers comprising all categories were selected randomly as sample of this study. Interview schedule was prepared for collection of data keeping in view the objectives and variables to be studied. Cosmopoliteness, communication exposure and organizational participation were considered as independent variables whereas farmers’ environmental knowledge was considered as dependent variable. Data collected through the face to face interview of the farmers were coded, tabulated and analyzed employing different statistical techniques. The communication exposure of a respondent was measured on the basis of extent of contact with the selected information sources within a given duration for getting required information. There were three levels of communication exposure: Personal contact, group contact and mass contact. All these three levels of communication exposure were categorized into regular, often, rare and not at all which were assigned score as 3,2,1,0 respectively and total score obtained by a respondent from all the three level of communication exposure were added together. Cosmopoliteness of the respondents was measured by the frequency of visit made by the respondent to selected places. Type of visit was categorized into never, rarely, oftenly and regularly which were assigned score as 0,1,2,3 respectively and total score obtained by a respondent were added together.

Organizational participation of a respondent was measured on the basis of the nature and duration of his/her participation in different organizations. Organizational participation score was computed by using the following formula:Organizational participation = (A × D).Where, A = Nature of involvement score and D = Duration score. Nature of involvement were categorized into no participation, Participation as ordinary member, Participation as executive committee member and Participation as secretary/chairman/president of the executive committee which were assigned score as o,1,2,and 3 respectively and total score obtained by a respondent were added together.Farmer’s environmental knowledge was measured by using a number of multiple choice questions. There were four different answers which were set in each question. The answers of the respondent were categorized into "wrong, good, better and best" which were assigned score as 0,1,2,3 respectively and total score obtained by a respondent were added together. The relationship between independent variables and dependent variable was measured using co-efficient of correlation analysis. Besides, reply of supplementary questions and observation of the investigator had been considered during analysis and interpretation.
