Genetic Analysis of Economic Traits in Maize (zea Mays L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A 6 X 6 diallel cross (excluding reciprocals) of maize (Zea Mays L.) indicated the importance of dominance for the days to silk, days to cob maturity, yield per plant and kernel weight. The ear height was observed to be controlled by two pairs of genes. Highest heritability (58%) was observed for plant height. The asymmetrical distribution of the positive and negative alleles at all loci was found for most of the characters. The graphical analysis indicated wide genetic diversity among the parents.

Objectives:

To investigate the genetic architecture of different important traits of maize.

Methodology:

Out of six inbred parents, three inbred parents viz. Ki 31, Ki 32 and Ki 42 were collected from the Kesetsart University, Thailand and the remaining three inbred parents viz. CML 0, CML 324 and CML 327 were collected from CIMMYT (Mexico), were crossed in all possible combinations and 15 F₁'s (excluding reciprocals) were produced. Probable origin and observed morphological features of these varieties are summarized. The parents and their F₁ hybrids were grown at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur, during the winter season, 1996-97. A tri-replicated randomized complete block design was followed. A single row of 5 m each constituted the experimental plot. The rows were spaced at 75 cm in which plant to plant distance within the row was 25 cm. Data were recorded from ten randomly selected competitive plants from each plot for plant height, ear height, days to tassel, days to silk, days to cob maturity, kernel yield, leaves per plant, ear length, ear diameter, number of rows per ear, number of kernels per rows, 1000-kernel weight. The data were analyzed for variance, genetic components of variation and Vr-Wr graphs.

Achievement/Findings:

It is observed from the graphical and the component of variance analysis that dominance effect was involved for most of the characters study. Therefore, it is concluded that heterosis breeding would be prospective for maize to bring out the desired improvement for different characters.
