Wildlife Diversity and Its Conservation Measures in the Metropolitan City of Chittagong, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Chittagong metropolitan the second largest and a unique city of Bangladesh with exceptional hilly areas, urban green space and lakes is the diverse habitat for its very rich wildlife species. To evaluate the species diversity, present status and augmentation of their conservation, a study was conducted between July 2010 and June 2011. A total of 109 wildlife species of different classes including amphibia 8, reptilia 16, aves 68 and mammalia 17 was observed in the selected areas of the city. Considering the environmental aspects of the areas major threats mainly deforestation, hill cutting and development of new residential areas and filling water bodies were identified to their habitat causing 8 species were lost and some species would be extinct in near future. Nature conservation programme can be a boon for the existence of the wildlife species and its habitat in the areas of the metropolitan city.

Objectives:

To highlight the existing dwindling wildlife species and its status at altering environment of CMC

Methodology:

Observation on the status of wildlife species was made during July, 2010 to June, 2011 by monthly visit in different hill areas of CMC. Wildlife species were recorded by different transect method within seven hill covering (227 ha). During the survey indirect clues (calls, foot prints, and droppings, scratches on ground, nest, tadpole and movement sound) were observed and noted for the presence of wildlife.Besides, the local people were interviewed to collect information on the existence of wildlife within the study area. Observation was started at dawn and continued till evening using binocular, field guides and reference books for the identification of wildlife species. In addition to this night surveys were also done for the presence of nocturnal animals.

Achievement/Findings:

The study has provided important baseline information for the first time on the wildlife diversity of CMC area in Bangladesh. The observed wildlife species indicates a good faunal variety in the study area. It is the time to protect the wildlife diversity by protecting their habitat and enforcing Bangladesh wildlife (preservation) order 1973. Wildlife are continuously facing severe disturbance to their habitat by deforestation, hill cutting and development of new residential areas and filling water bodies.
