Effect of Feeding System on Productive and Reproductive Performance of Bengal Sheep

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In adequate and poor quality feed resources is affecting the genetic potentiality of Bengal sheep and breed improvement programmers. In order to define which type of animal will be produced better performance in which type of feeding system, the study was conducted to determine the effect of feeding systems on productive and reproductive performances of Bengal sheep. 44 pre pubertal female lamb were allocated into two experimental groups under intensive and semi-intensive feeding system. Under intensive system animals were fed concentrate ration (15.0% CP; 11MJ ME/kg DM) @ of 1.5% of live weight with adlibitum green grass since May-November and supplied UMS during December-April. In semi-intensive system in addition to daily 8 hours grassing and concentrate followed the intensive system. Reproductive trait e.g. age and weight at first heat, age and weight at first lambing, service (s) per conception, gestation length, litter size and birth weight were recorded. Milk yield was recorded at 2 weeks of lambing. Data were analyzed by using independent sample t-test of SPSS (version 9.5) statistical package. Whereas conception rate, lamb survivability rate were expressed in percent.It was found that intensive and semi-intensive feeding system was not affected on productive and reproductive performances of Bengal sheep. Semi-intensive feeding system is better to rear sheep under farmers condition or commercial purpose.

Objectives:

Methodology:

44 pre-pubertal stages female lamb of about average 12.5±2.5kg live weight and about 7.5 months of age were randomly selected from BLRI sheep farm. Animals were equally and randomly allocated into two experimental groups under intensive and semi-intensive feeding system.Under intensive system animals were fed concentrate ration (15.0% CP; 11MJ ME/kg DM) @ of 1.5% of live weight with adlibitum green grass since May-November and supplied UMS during December-April. In semi-intensive system in addition to daily 8 hours grassing and animal were fed concentrate followed the intensive system. The entire 44 ewes were mated as per approved plan of breeding at BLRI sheep farm. Reproductive trait e.g. age and weight at first heat, age and weight at first lambing, service (s) per conception, gestation length, litter size and birth weight were recorded. Milk yield was recorded at 2 weeks of lambing. Milk production was determined by lamb suckling method. Lamb weight was kept weekly. The data were analyzed by using independent sample t-test Compare mean procedure of SPSS (version 9.5) statistical package. Whereas conception rate, lamb survivability rate were expressed in percent.

Achievement/Findings:

Age at first service was not significantly (P>0.05) higher (350 days) in intensive group compare to semi intensive group (317 days). Age at first lambing and weight at first at first lambing was significantly (P<0.0) higher in intensive system (497.0 days) compare to semi-intensive system (465 days). There was no significant effect (P>0.05) of feeding system on reproductive performances of service per conception, litter size, lambing interval, gestation length and service period. Productive traits of birth weight, pre-weaning growth rate, weaning weight and milk production was not affected by feeding system. The conception rate was higher (98.0%) in semi-intensive system compared to intensive system (83.0%). Lamb survivability at birth was higher (100%) in intensive system than semi-intensive system (92.0%). It was found that intensive and semi-intensive feeding system was not affected on productive and reproductive performances of Bengal sheep. Semi-intensive feeding system is better to rear sheep under farmers condition or commercial purpose compare to intensive feeding system.
