Selection Index for Dry Bean Genotypes (phaseolus Vulgaris L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Selection index was constructed to identify suitable genotypes among 31 genotypes of dry bean for further breeding program following simultaneous selection model considering eight characters viz. days to 50:0 flowering, days to maturity. plant height, number of pods per plant, pod length, number of seeds per plant, 20-seed weight and seed Yield per plant. The selection score for 31 dry bean genotypes considering eight characters ranged from 97.6307 to 320.8345. Based on selection score top five genotypes were PB-G1, PB-S6, PB-S3, PB-S13 and PB-S8. Genetic gain was found to be 22.59305 at 10% selection intensity.

Objectives:

To identify superior genotypes of dry bean.

Methodology:

Thirty one genotypes of dry bean were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications at Genetics and Plant Breeding Field laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during rabi season of 2001-2002. Some genotypes were received from CIAT (Centro International de Agricultura Tropical), Columbia through Govt. sponsored COP (Crop Diversification Program) and the others were locally collected and developed. The unit block (replication) measured 3 m in length and 6 m in width; block to block distance was 60 cm, row to row distance was 30 cm and plant plant distance was maintained at 10 cm. Standard agronomic practices were followed. The crop was harvested when over 90% of the plants with mature pods of a genotype withered and turned brown. Data were recorded on viz. days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, number of pods per plant, pod length, number of seeds per plant, 20-seed weight and seed yield per plant. All the data were subjected to statistical analysis as per standard references and the subject texts. The genotype having highest genetic score might be selected as best. Promising genotypes were selected at 10% selection intensity (1. 76) with respect to selection score combine all characters.

Achievement/Findings:

The selection index for 25 newly developed soybean genotypes considering days to maturity, plant height, 100-seed and yield per plot and found selection efficiency as to 114%, but highest selection efficiency (115%) was found when consider all the ten characters. But, selection index using three yield components as number of pods, pod yield and seed yield per plant with M₃of two Vigna radiata cultivars and got highest genetic advance.
