Twenty one CMS (Cytoplasmic-genetic male sterility) lines were evaluated for some yield contributing characters to observe their variability, association and direct and indirect effect on yield. Stigma exertion rate, out crossing rate and yield per hill showed high genotypic coefficient of variation and heritability with high genetic advance in percent of mean was observed for stigma exertion rate, out crossing rate, number of tiller per hill and yield per hill. The highest genetic advance was observed for number of spike lets per panicle. Yield per hill had significant and positive correlation with out crossing rate and number of spike lets per panicle but showed only positive correlation with days to initial flowering, panicle exertion rate, stigma exertion rate, number of tiller per hill, panicle length and 100 seed weight. Path coefficient revealed maximum direct positive effects on out crossing rate followed by panicle length, 100 seed weight, panicle exertion rate, number of tillers per hill and number of spike lets per panicle.

To find out and establish suitable selection criteria for higher seed yield through study of genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance and relationship between yield and its contributing traits in CMS lines.

The experiment was carried out at the experimental farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur during July 2007 to December 2007. Experimental material was consists of 21 CMS (A) lines along with their respective 21 maintainer (B) lines of rice. The CMS lines were LohaguraA, Kuchi AusA, KalamanikA, ManikmudaA, DuckshahiA, IR62429A, GAN 46A, IR79155A, Jin 23A, IR78354A, IR75595A, IR77805A, IR68890A, IndaA, Boro109/2A, Bor06/2A, Goa Bish(2)A, Boro67A, Bor034/IA, Bor070/2A and BRRIA. The seeds of CMS lines were obtained by crossing with its respective maintainer lines. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Healthy seedlings of 40 days old were transplanted in separate strips with 20 X 20 cm spacing between plant to plant and row to row. The planting pattern ratio of CMS and maintainer was 4:4. Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum were applied @ 220-120-90-60 kg/ha, respectively. Total TSP, MP and Gypsum were applied in final land preparation. Total Urea was applied in three installments, at 15 days after transplanting (DAT), 30 DAT and 50 DAT as per recommendation. Other management practices were taken as and when necessary. Data were collected from 10 randomly selected hills of each genotype on individual plant basis on the characters of plant height, number of tillers per hill, days to initial flowering, panicle exertion rate, stigma exertion rate, out crossing rate, panicle length (cm), number of spike lets per panicle, 100 seed weight (g), yield per hill (g). The mean square (MS) error and phenotypic variances were estimated. Genotypic and phenotypic co-efficient of variation was calculated by the formula. Broad sense heritability was estimated. The expected genetic advance for different characters under selection was estimated using the formula. For calculating the genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficient for all possible combination the formula were adopted. Correlation coefficient were further partitioned into components of direct and indirect effects by path coefficient analysis originally developed and later described.

Stigma exertion rate, out crossing rate, yield per hill, number of tillers per hill and number of spike lets per panicle showed high genotypic coefficient of variation and heritability and also high genetic advance in percent mean. In correlation and path coefficient analysis, it was observed that the out crossing rate and stigma exertion rate are the most important yield components in CMS lines. Therefore, the results suggested that these components are important yield contributing traits and identification of varieties for hybrid rice production.
