Technical Performance Evaluation of Boyra Deep Tube Well- a Case Study

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A two-year (1994-95 and 1995-96) field study was conducted on Boyra deep tube well irrigation system to evaluate the performance of the deep tube well. Conveyance loss was found significantly high (42.56%). which was mostly due to seepage through the porous banks. spillage and leakage through poorly sealed outlets. Application efficiency was found 89.35 per cent. The average seepage and percolation loss from paddy field was found 1.5 cm/day. The deep tube well was found under-utilized. Measures such as compaction or lining the channel. reducing the channel length. and providing freeboard of the channel may reduce the high conveyance loss. Similarly. measures for reducing on-farm water loss such as compaction of the border and organic manuring in the field may provide good result. which will contribute to increase conveyance efficiency. and thus will reduce input water cost. This incentive will help to increase command area under the deep tube well.

Objectives:

To find the causes of low irrigation efficiencies and render suggestions for improvement.

Methodology:

A field study was conducted in Boyra deep tube well irrigation system (Mymensingh, Bangladesh. 24°45 N, 90°24 E and 19 m above mean sea level) during the Boro season of 1994-95 and was repeated in 1995- 96. The tube well was operated by farmers. They irrigate high yielding variety of rice during the Boro season. In winter, they irrigate wheat and vegetables. The study was initiated with a view to knowing the command area by the DTW and also to find the causes of low irrigation efficiencies. Achievement/Findings:

The measured discharge of the studied deep tube well was found to be considerably lower than the design or rated capacity as it has been running only for 7 years. The DTW was found under-utilized. Conveyance loss was significantly high (42.54%). Even though a portion of those losses is reused in the system. especially in rice growing areas. that do not give practical benefit and high conveyance losses caused serious difficulty in delivering water to remote fields. There were 18.22 ha of cultivable land for rice and 6.07 ha for wheat. Hence improvement and maintenance of the distribution channels are prerequisites to increase net return and to increase present command area.
