Suitability of Jute Fibre as Tensile Reinforcement in Cement Concrete

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An attempt has been made to examine the suitability of jute fibre as tensile reinforcement in cement concrete. Cylindrical specimens of concrete mixed with different percentages of jute were tested after curing for 28 days in the laboratory. The jute fibre reinforced concrete was found to have 5 to 82 kN/m² more tensile strength than the plain concrete due to the addition of 0.5 to 1.5 per cent jute fibre. When 2 per cent jute fibre was added, its tensiIe strength was lower than the plain concrete. It was found that jute-reinforced concrete was economic for I per cent jute fibre in the mixing ratio of 1:2.5:5.

Objectives:

1. To determine the suitability of jute fibre as tensile reinforcement in cement concrete.

2. To compare the tensile strength of plain concrete and jute fibre concrete.

3. To determine the economic design of jute fibre reinforced concrete.

Methodology:

Locally available sand and ordinary Portland cement was used throughout the experiment. Jute was used as reinforcement. Jute fibres were up to 2.54 cm in length. The diameter of jute fibre varied from 20 to 1 00 --m. They were different in shapes varying from light yellow to brownish in colour. The cross section of fibre was roughly polygonal in shape and sometimes with sharply defined angles. The cylinder moulds of cast iron 15.25 x 30.48 cm was used for casting. One end was closed by a plain steel plate and the other was kept open. The four mixed proportions 1 :2:4. 1:2.5:5. 1:3:6 and 1:3.5:7 were used in preparing the cylindrical specimens. The amount of materials for each mix proportion was calculated and mixed in dry condition on a tray. The jute fibres were mixed and water was gradually added till it slump value was 2.54 cm. The material was then cast in three layers with ten poking in each layer. The arrangement of jute fibre was randomly distributed at various proportions. The top of the cylinder was levelled and marked and stored for 24 hours at room temperature. The cylinders were extruded from the mould one day after casting and were water cured for 28 days. After the desired time of curing the cylinders were air dried for at least 24 hours being placed in the Compression Testing Machine. The crushing load (P) was applied on the specimen by lowering the plate at a continuous rate of 0.7 mm per minute. The maximum load (P) was recorded.

Economic design procedure: The economic design of jute fibre concrete was done following the steps below: 1. Required strength was determined for a given construction. 2. From corresponding mixing ratio for 1 per cent jute fibre was determined. For example. to design a pipe requiring 600 kN/m² strength. the best mixing ratio for economic design was 1 :2.5:5. This strength is nearly the same as plain concrete.

Achievement/Findings:

It is an encouraging investigation for the utilization of jute fibre as a tensile reinforcement material in cement concrete. The following conclusions were made regarding the effect of jute fibre derived from this study:

1. The maximum tensile strength of 82 kN/m² was found for 1 per cent jute fibre at the mixing ratio of 1 :3 :6.

2. The increase in cost for the introduction of jute fibre is very little in comparison to the increase in tensile strength.

3. Jute fibre from 0.5 per cent to 1.5 per cent can be used in concrete with advantage as tensile reinforcement.
