Effect of Coloured Polythene Cover on Micro-environment of a Bare Land and a Crop Canopy

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Attempts were made to investigate the effect of coloured polythene mulches /covers on soil and canopy microclimate . The mulch surface temperature was highest over blue polythene and the lowest over transparent polythene. Soil surface temperature and soil temperature were highest below the transparent polythene mulch and the lowest temperature under the blue polythene mulch. Blue polythene mulch produced the highest long wave radiation whereas the lowest long wave radiation was produced by transparent polythene mulch. Coloured polythene covers influenced air temperature and canopy temperature. The maximum air temperature and canopy temperature were found under transparent polythene cover followed by red and blue polythene covers and the minimum was found in control. The Relative humidity under different coloured polythene covers was lower than that of control. The maximum solar radiation was measured over the control field followed by transparent and red polythene cover and minimum under blue polythene cover.

Objectives:

To report the variation in microclimate of a bare soil and a crop canopy under various colored polythene covers.

Methodology:

Experiments were conducted at the Field Laboratory of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh . Bare land in March 1999 and Transplanted Aman rice (BR II) during July - December 1999 were used for the investigation, The experiment consisted of four treatments, which were denoted as T₀ = control (without polythene), T₁ = blue polythene cover, T₂ = red polythene cover, and T₃ = transparent polythene cover. To observe the variation in soil microclimate, bare land was used. Plastic papers mentioned above were placed over weed free plot. The area of each plot was 2.0 m². Mulch surface temperature, soil surface temperature below the mulch and soil temperature at 5 cm depth were measured with appropriate instruments on a clear day (March 10, 1999). Upward long wave radiation (LWR) produced by various coloured surface of plastic mulches and the control were calculated from surface temperature. Each plot of transplanted aman rice was covered with the coloured polythene paper at 20 DAT. Each polythene paper had holes of uniform area (3.1 cm²) 10 cm apart on four sides for the entry of air and for the reduction of extreme temperature produced within the polythene covers due to green house effect. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The whole experimental plot was divided into three blocks. Each block was subdivided into four unit-plots measuring 3.0m x 2.0m each. The space left between blocks and unit plots were 1.0m and 1.0m respectively. Treatments were randomly distributed to each unit- plot within a block. Necessary cultural practices were done as and when required. The micrometeorological parameters. air temperature and relative humidity were measured using Psychrometer; surface temperatures (soil, mulch and canopy) were measured using Infrared Radiation Thermometer; solar radiation was measured using Pyranometer; light was measured using Quantum Sensor and soil temperature was measured using simple soil thermometer in a clear sunny day at one hour interval on 10 March 1999 and for canopy on 11 October 1999 starting from 0600 h to 1800 h.

Achievement/Findings:

The study show that soil and canopy microclimatic parameters can be changed with mulching using various coloured polythene covers. Therefore, coloured polythene mulches as cover or canopy cover are recommended' evaluate the response of a crop in changed, microclimate, which may be either stressful favourable for a particular crop.
