Diversity Analysis in Brinjal

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at the experimental farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from November 2005 to March, 2006 to Study on diversity analysis in brinjal were done on thirty four brinjal genotypes and the diversity based on qualitative and quantitative characters. Significant variations were observed among the brinjal lines for all the parameters under study. Principal Component Analysis, Principal Coordinate Analysis and Canonical Variate Analysis had exhibited similar results. Cluster V and IV had the maximum of 12 and the minimum of 1 lines respectively. The highest intra-cluster distance was observed in cluster I followed by V. The highest inter-cluster distance was observed between cluster I and IV and the lowest between the cluster II and III. The characters such as number of fruits per plant, fruit length, fruit diameter and fruit weight contributed maximum towards divergence among the brinjal lines. Genetic divergence was not found to be related to geographical diversity. Analyzing diversity pattern and other agronomic performance, the line 25 from cluster IV, lines 20, 24, 16, 19 and 23 from cluster V, line 6 and 31 from cluster II were selected as better parents for future hybridization program.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the experimental farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from November, 2005 to March, 2006 to study the diversity based on qualitative and quantitative characters and Study on diversity analysis in brinjal were done on thirty four brinjal genotypes.A total of thirty four genotypes (34) of brinjal collected from Chittagong and BARI was used in this experiment.The study was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three (3) replications. Each replication contains 544 plants of 34 genotypes. The spacing was 80 cm x 50 cm. The unit plot size was 29 m x 29 m. The plot distance was 1.0 m. The genotypes were randomly distributed to each row within each line. Twenty eight days old seedlings were transplanted in well prepared experimental plot on 28th November, 2005.Ten plants were selected for each genotype from every replication and tagged properly at random from each row for recording data. Data on days to first flowering, days to first harvesting, fruit color, fruit shape, plant height, no. of primary branches/plant, no. of secondary branches/plant, fruit length, fruit diameters, fruit per plant, weight per fruit, yield per plant, percent insect infestation were recorded.Genetic diversity was estimated following Mahalanobis’s (1936) generalized distance (D2). Selection of parents in hybridization programme based on Mahalanobis’s D2 statistic Statistical analysis such as Mahalanobis D2 and Canonical Variate Analysis (CVA),. Mean data of each quantitative character were subjected to both univariate and multivariate analysis. For univariate analysis of variance, analysis was done individually and least of significance was done by F- Test (Pense and Shukhatme, 1978). Mean, range, co-efficient of variation (CV) and correlation was estimated using MSTAT computer program. Multivariate analysis viz., Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Principal Coordinate Analysis (PCO), Cluster Analysis (CLU) and Canonical Variate Analysis (CVA) were done by using GENSTAT program.
