The study was conducted at Jhinaigatiupazila of Sherpur district during January To December 2006 to asses the adoption of selected rice production technologies and to determine the relationship of selected characteristics of the Garo farmers. The highest proportion (56 percent) of Garo farmers fell under the medium adoption category, while 17 percent had high and 27 percent had low adoption. Thus, an overwhelming majority of the Garo farmers had medium to low adoption. Education,family income, extension contact, rice production knowledge and innovativeness of the Garo farmers had positive significant relationships with their adoption of selected rice production technologies. Such variables as family size, farm size, organizational participation, cosmopoliteness and training exposure had no significant relationships. Age of the Garo farmers was the only variable, which had negative insignificant relationship Based on the innovation-decision process and innovativeness, most of the Garo farmers still do not know the existence of improved seed bed (45.45 percent), age of seedling (50.90 percent), IPM (50.90 percent), improved irrigation (59.09 percent), Azola (87.27 percent). Out of 110 Garo farmers only 26.36 percent were at confirmation stage and 18.18 percent respondents do not use or do not know about HYV seeds.

The Jhinaigatiupazila of Sherpur district was the locale of this study during January to December 2006. Jhinaigatiupazila is located at 30 k.m. north of Sherpur town and 100 k.m. north of Mymensingh.Seven villages of Jhinaigati were selected as study area and those are Dudnoy, Baruamari, Gozarikura, Zarultola, Gazni, Noukuchi and Dhanshail. The study areas are mostly inhibited by a good number of Garo families.Double stage sampling method was used for selecting sample of the study. At first, seven (7) villages were selected at random from Jhinaigatiupazila. The total number of Garo families in these villages was 440. All the head of these Garo families constituted the population for this study. Data were, however collected from a sample of Adivasi rather than the whole population. A list of all these 440 family head was prepared in the first step. In the second step, 25% of the Garo family head of each of the seven villages were selected by using a table of Random Numbers. One hundred and ten (110) Garo family head were selected in this way as the sample of this study.In the present study, 11 selected characteristics of Garo farmers such as their age, education, farm size, annual family income, organizational participation, cosmopoliteness, extension contact, training exposure, rice production knowledge and innovative ness were taken as independent variables. On the other hand, the dependent variable was the adoption of selected rice production technologies by the Garo farmers.

The collected raw data were examined thoroughly to find out the errors and omissions. For this, a careful scrutiny of the complete interview schedule was made to make sure that they were entered as complete as possible and well arranged to facilitate coding and tabulation. Very minor mistakes were detected by doing this, which were corrected promptly. Having consulted with research supervisor, detailed coding plan was prepared. All responses in the interview schedule were given numerical coded values. Local units were converted into standard units. All the individual responses to the questions of the interview schedule were transferred to a master sheet to facilitate tabulation. In case of qualitative data, appropriate scoring technique was followed to convert the data into quantitative forms. These were then tabulated according to the objectives of the study. For describing the various independent and dependent variables, the respondents were classified into various categories and arranged in simple tables for description. These categories were developed for each of the variables by considering the nature of distribution of the data and the general consideration prevailing in the social system.

The collected data were compiled, coded, tabulated and analyzed in accordance with the objectives of the study. Qualitative data were quantified by means of suitable scoring techniques. The statistical measures such as range, mean, standard deviation, percentage distribution and rank order were used to describe both the independent and dependent variables. Tables were also used in presenting data for clarity of understanding.
