Five different types of Melia azedaracb saplings were planted in Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU) campus and studied for two years to observe their growth performance, survival rate and establishment status. Different growth parameters such as total height (TH), girth at breast height (gbh) and increments were studied. Polybag large sized saplings showed maximum survival rate (98.33%), where the lowest survival rate was found (80%) in bare rooted unrest saplings. Polybag saplings established easily in the main field with a negligible injury. Polybag large, medium and small sized saplings showed 0%, 1.67% and 1.67% top dying injury respectively, but bare rooted unrest saplings established in the main field with severe top dying injury (76.67%). The average maximum total height (TH) and gbh (8.1m & 24.0cm) were found in polybag medium sized sapling followed by polybag small sized sapling (7.6m & 22.6cm).The lowest TH and gbh were 5.6m and 15.2cm in bare rooted unrest sapling which was statistically similar to that of bare rooted rested sapling (6.5m & 18.1cm ). The highest growth performance was found in polybag medium sized saplings by two years followed by polybag small sized, polybag large sized, bare rooted rested and bare rooted unrest saplings. The maximum (3.1 m/year) mean annual increment (MAl) for height was found in both polybag small and medium sized saplings. But Maximum MAl for girth (11.0 em/year) was found in polybag small sized saplings followed by polybag medium sized saplings (10.65 cm/year).

To select the superior type saplings of this promising species as well as its performance in Agroforestry practices.

The experiment was conducted in the Agroforestry farm of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University campus, Dinajpur during the period from September 2001 to September 2003 to study the performance of different types of Goraneem saplings. Soil types of the study area is highland deep grey terrace soils of barind tract agroecological regions. Five types of saplings are collected for the experiment, such as polybag large sized (SI) approximately 2.2m in height, polybag medium sized (S2) approximately 1.7m in height, polybag small sized (S3) approximately 1.3m in height, medium sized bare rooted but rested (S4) and medium sized bare rooted but unrest saplings (S5). A total of 300 saplings representing 60 saplings for each of the selected types were transplanted. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications, where five sapling types were five treatments, 20 saplings of each type were planted in each plot randomly. The plot-to-plot distance was 3.0 m. For plantation of saplings, 25 em x 25cm x25cm size pit was prepared in the plot before 20 days of planting. Half basket cow dung, 10gm M.P and 10gm T.S.P were incorporated with the soil of each pit thoroughly at the time of pit preparation. The plantation was completed in the last weak of August 2001 maintaining 1.5mx1.5m spacing in each plot. The plantation was late due to prolong drought and late monsoon of 2001. Sticking was done properly. No irrigation was done after planting due to heavy rainfall of that time. The trees were allowed to grow in rain fed condition and no other intercultural operation was done except earthing up to the base of plant annually. Ten plants selected randomly from each type of saplings were earmarked for data collection. The data were collected twice in a year, once in first week of September and another in first week of March. Different growth parameters i.e., total height (TH), girth at breast height (gbh), mean annual increment (MAl) were measured. The TH and gbh were analyzed by MSTAT program and mean separation was done in LSD.

Considering the growth parameters, the polybag medium sized saplings of Goraneem was found to be superior to other types. Depending on the growth potentialities (MAl), the polybag small sized saplings were found to be the best. So, polybag small to medium sized saplings of Goraneem should be planted as planting material in the highland deep grey terrace soils of barind tract agroecological regions to get better results from tree plantation program.
