A pot experiment was carried out involving 2 modern varieties of boro rice and II sources of nitrogen viz. 100% N from prilled urea (PU). 100% N from vermicompost (VC). 100% N from grass pea biomass (GPB). 100% N from poultry manure (PM). 100% N from polythene pit compost (PPC). 100% N from Azolla manure (AM). 50% N from VC + 50% N from PU. 50% from GPB + 50% N from PU, 50% N from PM + 50% N from PU, 50% N from PPC + 50% N from PU, 50% N from AM + 50% from PU}. Yield and most of the yield attributes were found identical in both the varieties. Grain yield was higher for 100% N from PU and that was comparable to those obtained from 50% N from GPB + 50% N from PU, 100% from GPB and 50% N from PM + 50% N from PU. Grain yield was the lowest when 100% N was given from AM. The highest grain yield (535.70 g/m2) was obtained from BINAdhan6 with 100% N from PU. The second highest grain vield was in BINAdhan6 with 50% N tram GPB + 50% N tram PU while the lowest gram Yield (367.00 g/m-2) was in the same variety with 100% N from AM. Soil fertility was improved substentially due to the application of organic manure alone or in combination with PU but soil received 100% N from PU showed the lowest fertility status.

To study the effect of integrated N supply as urea with appropriate sources organic on yield of rice as well as on soil chemical properties.

A pot experiment was carried out in the net house of Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November 2000 to June 2001 to study the effect of different sources of nitrogen on the yield of rice and soil fertility. The treatments included were two boro rice varieties (viz. BINAdhan6 and BRRldhan29) and eleven nitrogen sources viz., 100% N from prilled urea (PU); 100% N from vermicompost (VC); 100% N from grass pea biomass (GPB); 100% N from poultry manure (PM); 100% N from polythene pit compost (PPC); 100% N from Azolla manure (AM); 50% N from VC + 50% N from PU; 50% N from GPB + 50% N from PU; 50% N from PM + 50% N from PU; 50% N from PPC + 50% N from PU and 50% N from AM + 50% N from PU. The chemical properties of the test soil were pH 6.76, organic matter 1.52%, total N 0.078%, available P 4.26 mg kg-1, exchangeable K 0.120 me 100g-1 and available S 14.90 mg kg-1. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with 3 replications. Experimental soils were applied with 100, 25, 40, 25 and 5 mg/kg N, P, K, S and Zn of dry soil, respectively. Doses of organic manures were estimated as per their nutrient content to fulfil the required dose of nitrogen and other nutrients (N, P, K, Sand Zn). Three hills of 50-day old seedlings were transplanted in each pot giving two seedlings/hill. Yield and yield contributing characters were recorded at harvest. Postharvest soils were analyzed to evaluate the fertility status. Data analysis was done using M-stat computer package programme.

Application of 100% N from prilled urea gave the highest yield which was identical to those from 50% N from grass pea biomass + 50% N from prilled urea, 100% N from grass pea biomass and 50% N from poultry manure + 50% N from prilled urea. Organic manures alone or in combination with prilled urea improved the soil fertility status but prilled urea alone did not improve soil fertility status substantially. The soiI fertility status improvement could be possible without significant yield loss in boro rice by substituting urea N by 50-100% through grasspea biomass and by 50% through poultry manure.
