An experiment was conducted at the research farm of the Department of Agro forestry and Environment, Bangabundhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur to evaluate the five table banana genotypes during the period from November 2012 to June 2014. Five banana genotypes were collected from different Upazilla under Narsingdi District. Thus, there were five treatments in the experiment which was replicated thrice. The higher plant height was recorded in genotype Gerasundari (4.8m) and the higher base girth was also noticed in this line. The SPAD value was found higher in Gerasundari than other genotypes. The genotype Gerasundari yielded the highest (30.13 t/ha) followed by the genotype Kabri (29.13 t/ha).

To evaluate the five table banana genotypes.

An experiment was conducted at the research farm of the department of Agro forestry and Environment, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur 1706 during the period from November, 2012 to June, 2014. The experimental area was under the sub-tropical climate zone, characterized by high temperature and high rainfall during April to September and little or no rainfall during October to March. The average annual rainfall is 2000 mm. The experiment was set up in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The collected five genotypes of banana comprised the five different treatments of the experiment. The suckers of banana were planted in the main field on 17.11.2012. The unit plot size was 4 m x 4 m and the spacing followed was 2 m x 2 m. The land selected for the field experiment was opened 15 days before planting of sucker. It was then thoroughly prepared by ploughing and cross ploughing with a power tiller followed by laddering to obtain good tilth. During land preparation, weeds and stumbles were collected and removed from the field and the clods were broken with the help of hand. The surface of the land was leveled, and finally irrigation and drainage channels were prepared around the plots. Final land preparation was done one week before pit preparation. Pits of 45 cm x 45 cm x 45 cm size were prepared. Banana suckers were planted on pit and distance was maintained 2 m x 2 m. A space of 1 m was kept in between the blocks. Farm yard manure (FYM) and fertilizers - Cowdung and N, P2O5, K2O and S were applied @ 10 kg and 300, 200, 400 and 4 g per plant per annum, respectively. The entire quantity of FYM, triple super phosphate (TSP) and gypsum were applied at the time of pit preparation and mixed uniformly with the soil of pit. Urea and muriate of potash (MP) were applied in four equal installments at 60 days interval commencing from 60 days after planting. Both urea and muriate of potash were mixed thoroughly and spread in the bed and were incorporated into the soil by hand wider. Adequate moisture was maintained at least for a fortnight after application of fertilizers. During dry season, the plants were irrigated to maintain satisfactory level of moisture in the soil. The field layout and management were such that the excess rain water during the monsoon could drain out quickly. The experimental plots were kept free of weeds by periodical weeding. The plants were always kept under careful observation. After planting suckers different intercultural operations as mentioned below were accomplished.

Analysis of variance revealed that there had a significant difference among the table banana varieties tested pertaining to the parameter plant height. It was found that the Geresundari plant attained the maximum height (4.80m). The plant height of Sabri-1, Kabri and Champa were statistically at par and the lowest plant height was recorded in Sabri-2. Significant variation was exhibited as to the yield of banana genotypes tested in the present experiment. It was observed that the genotypes Gerasundari yielded the highest (30.13 t/ha) which was statistically different from rest of the genotypes. The higher number of hands/bunch, higher total weight of hands per bunch, higher individual finger weight higher length of finger and higher individual finger weight at ripe condition might be the reasons for higher yield of Gerasundari. So, Gerasundari may be considered as the promising genotype for release as a variety pending further verification in different agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh.
