Recharge to aquifers is of prime importance in the assessment of regional groundwater sources and irrigation planning. The study was therefore conducted at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) experimental farm, Joydebpur, Gazipur from 1982 to 2001 to identify lowering of groundwater table and to document the pattern and period of groundwater recharge in Joydebpur aquifer and its relation hip with the rainfall pattern of the area. It was observed that rainfall during 1980's was higher than that occurred during 1990's and groundwater recharged back either in last part of September or in October during the study period. About 85 percent time, the peak groundwater level was found in October and the rest were in September. The study showed that groundwater recharge pattern of Joydebpur aquifer can easily be explained by yearly total rainfall. In absence of yearly rainfall data, only the rainfall amounts of September can be used to fairly estimate groundwater recharge of this aquifer.

To document the pattern and period of groundwater recharge in Joydebpur aquifer and its relationship with the rainfall pattern of the area.

The study was conducted at BRRI experimental farm, Joydebpur, Gazipur from 1982 to 2001 to identify lowering of groundwater table and its relationship with the dry season rainfall. Measurement of groundwater: An electric probe was used for the determination of groundwater level. It was measured weekly at 6:00 AM from an observation well installed in the BRRI experimental farm. Four weekly values were averaged to get the monthly water table position of the aquifer. Measurement of rainfall: Rainfall values were collected from BRRI meteorological station located about 300 m apart from the observation well. Monthly total rainfall was taken as the rainfall of a particulary month. Relationship of the groundwater recharge with rainfall was developed by using the highest water table with the total rainfall the particular month.

Groundwater recharge pattern of Joydebpur aquifer can easily be explained by yearly total rainfall. In absence of yearly rainfall data, only rainfall amounts of September can be used to fairly estimate groundwater recharge of Joydebpur aquifer. But there are plenty of rainfall data sets available at the BRRI and Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. Those rainfall data can be used for safe prediction of groundwater level of Joydebpur aquifer. We need not to use rainfall values of September only to predict it. This recharge estimation would be helpful for dry seasons irrigation and judicious crop planning in this area.
