An experiment was conducted to study the effect of organic manure and nitrogen fertilizer on growth and yield of Chinese cabbage at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during September 2006 to January 2007.
The seeds of BARI China copy-1 were used and collected from Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur.
The seedlings were raised at Horticulture Farm, SAU, Dhaka with special care in a 3 m x 1 m seed bed.
Treatment of the Experiment
The experiment consisted of two factors. Details are presented below: Factor A: Four levels of organic manure
i. OMo = Control
ii. OMi = 10 t/ha cowdung (contents 100 kg N2, 60 kg P2O5, 120 kg K20)
iii. OM2 = 15 t/ha cowdung (contents 150 kg N2, 90 kg P2O5, 180 kg K20)
iv. OM3 = 20 t/ha cowdung (contents 200 kg N2, 120 kg P2O5, 240 kg K20)
Factor B: Three levels of Nitrogen
i. No = Control
ii. Ni = 100 kg N/ha
iii. N2 = 150 kg N/ha
There were 12 (4 x 3) treatment combinations viz OM0N0, OM0N1, OM0N2, OM1No, OM1N1, OM1N2, OM2N0, OM2N1, OM2N2, OM3N1, OM3N1 and OM3N2.
Design and layout of the Experiment
The experiment was laid out in the two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The layout of the experiment was prepared for distributing the treatment combinations in each plot of each block. Each block was divided into 12 plots where 12 treatment combinations were allotted at random. There were 48 unit plots altogether in the experiment. The size of the plot was 2.4 111 x 1.5 m. The distance between two blocks and two plots were 1.0 m and 0.5 m, respectively.
Transplanting of seedlings
Healthy and uniform sized thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field on November 26, 2005.
Statistical analysis
'Hie data obtained for different characters were statistically analyzed to find out the significance of the organic manure and nitrogen fertilizers on yield and yield contributing characters of Chinese cabbage. The analysis of variance was performed by using MSTAT Program. The significance of the difference among the treatment combinations means was estimated by DMRT (Duncan’s Multiple Range Test) at 5% level of probability (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
