An experiment was conducted to study the effect of different organic manure and seedling age on growth and yield of Chinese cabbage during September 2006 to January 2007 at the Horticultural Farm, SAU, Dhaka. The highest values were recorded in plant height (27.10 cm), plant spread (43.96 cm), number of folded leaves per plant (30.21), head weight (1.63 kg), gross yield (95.02 t/ha) and marketable yield (81.30 t/ha) from mustard oil cake followed by cowdung as organic manure and the lowest value was recorded from poultry manure. Seedling age highest values was recorded in plant height (26.80 cm), plant spread (43.48 cm), number of folded leaves per plant (29.90), head weight (1.60 kg), gross yield (93.73 t/ha) and marketable yield (80.15 t/ha) from 30 days of seedling and the lowest value was recorded from 25 and 35 days of seedling. The highest gross return (Tk. 521,640), net return (Tk. 329,834) and benefit cost ratio (2.72) was obtained from the treatment combination of mustard oil cake and 30 days of seedling and the lowest (Tk. 390.000, 190,366 and 1.95, respectively) was obtained from the treatment combination of poultry manure and 25 days of seedling.

1. To assess the performance of different organic manure for the production of Chinese cabbage.

2. To know the effect of different seedling age and to find out the actual age of seedling for economical production of Chinese cabbage.

3. To find out the interaction effect of different organic manure and seedling age for the production of Chinese cabbage viewing maximum yield.

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of different organic manure and seedling age on growth and yield of Chinese cabbage during September 2006 to January 2007 at the Horticultural Farm, SAU, Dhaka.Seeds of BARI China copy-1 were used and collected from Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur.The seedlings were raised at the Horticultural Farm, SAU, Dhaka under special care in a 3 m x 1 m size seed bed. The soil of the seed bed was well ploughed with a spade and prepared into loose friable dried masses and to obtain good tilth to provide a favorable condition for the vigorous growth of young seedlings. Weeds, stubbles and dead roots of the previous crop were removed. The seedbed was dried in the sun to destroy the soil insect and protect the young seedlings from the attack of damping off disease. To control damping off disease cupravit fungicide were applied. Decomposed cowdung was applied to the prepared seedbed at the rate of 10 t/ha. Ten (10) grams of seeds were sown in each seedbed on October 15, 2006. After sowing, the seeds were covered with finished light soil. At the end of germination shading was done by bamboo mat (chati) over the seedbed to protect the young seedlings from scorching sunshine and heavy rainfall. Light watering, weeding done as and when necessary to provide seedlings with ideal condition for better growth.The experiment was designed to study the effects of organic manure and different seedling age on growth and yield of Chinese cabbage. The experiment considered of two factors are as follows- Factor A: Different organic manure (OM)

i. OM1: Cowdung

ii. OM2: Poultry manure

iii. OM3: Mustard oil cake

 

Factor B: Different seedling age

i. Si: 25 days of seedling

ii. S2: 30 days of seedling

iii. S3: 35 days of seedling

There were 9 (3 x 3) treatment combinations such as OM1S1, OM1S2, OM1S3, OM2S1, OM2S2, OM2S3, OM3S2, OM3S2 and OM3S3.The experiment was laid out two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The layout of the experiment was prepared for distributing the treatment combinations in each plot of each block. Each block was divided into 9 plots where 9 treatment combinations were allotted at random. There were 27 unit plots altogether in the experiment. The size of the plot was 2.8 m x 1.5 m. The distance between two blocks and two plots were kept 0.75 m and 0.50 m, respectively.The data obtained for different characters were statistically analyzed to find out the significance of the different organic manure and seedling age on yield and yield contributing characters of Chinese cabbage. The mean values of all the characters were evaluated and analysis of variance was performing by the ‘F’ (variance ratio) test. The significance of the difference among the treatment combinations means was estimated by the Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of probability (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
