Performance of Lentil Genotypes Under Rainfed Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out with lentil genotypes (four ICARDA lines, 6 mutants and a check L-5) at BNA sub-station, Rangpur during rabi season, 1994-95 under rainfed condition. The experiment was laid out randomized complete block design with three replications. The ICARDA lines were taller and produced better biomass and more primary branches and more seeds as compared to local variety. ICARDA lines required 10-19 days more for their maturity. The mutant lines although showed higher harvest index than the exotic lines, but they did not outyield the better exotic lines. However, ML-22 and ML-42 outyielded the local check L-5 significantly. ICARDA lines recorded higher values of ontogenic CGR and NAR whereas the variety recorded less. ICARA-44202 and ICARDA-11123 lines may be adapted for dry land cultivation with a good grain yield. Among BINA mutants, ML-22 and ML-42 may be recommended for dry land cultivation.

Objectives:

To identify lentil genotype which may show higher yield under moisture condition

Methodology:

Four ICARDA lines (ICARA-44202, 44123, 44210 and 44209), 6 mutant lines (ML-18, 20, 22, 42, 432 and 478) and a standard check L-5 were grown under field condition at Bina sub-station, Rangpur during rabi season, 1994-95 under rainfed condition. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 3 m x 3 m. The row to row distance was 28 cm and plant to plant distance was 6 cm. To determine the moisture level, soil samples were collected from the experimental plots at 10 day's intervals during the crop growth period. The moisture level during the crop growth period was shown in Figure. A total of 6 harvests were made starting at the age of 45 DAS (days after sowing). The leaf area per plant, height, total dry matter and chlorophyll contents were recorded at different times. Crop growth rate (CGR) and Ne assimilation rate (NAR) were calculated from the mean leaf area and total dry matter of each plant. The data on yield and yield components were recorded at the final harvest.
