Evaluation of Groundnut Mutants Under Soil Moisture Stress

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was carried out with 9 selected groundnut mutants along with a check, Zhinga badam at BINA, Mymensingh during rabi season, 1994-95. The plants were grown under three moisture regimes (control, 2 and 4 days' intervals of watering). The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design with three replications. The mutants, T-266 , En-13, T-446 and En-17 produced better biomass, higher pod yield and showed more chlorophyll content under soil moisture stress condition. Zhinga badam showed better biomass but lower yield. T-294, En-9 and T275, 62-30 showed medium biomass with good pot yield. The two mutants viz., T-266, En-17 showed a combination of high relative water content of leaf at the point of stomatal closure and the time required to reach the point of stomatal closure. That means, the excised leaves of these two lines could maintain turgor for a protracted period at relative water content for stomatal function.

Objectives:

To assess the effect of water stress on groundnut mutants and to find out stress tolerant mutant

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted under glasshouse condition with 9 selected groundnut mutants along with a check, Zhinga badam. The plants were grown under three moisture regimes (control, 2 and 4 days' intervals of watering) in rabi season, 1994-95. Each treatment was replicated three times. Each pot contained 7 kg of BINA farm soil. Two plants were allowed to grow in each pot. Equal amount of water was allowed to the pots at 2 and 4 days intervals to maintain the treatments. Treatments were applied at the early vegetative stage up to crop maturity. The relative leaf water content of fresh leaves and the transpiration decline curves of the excised saturated leaves in the following days were determined at the flowering stage by weighing the leaf at frequent intervals. During weighing, when the leaves become flaccid and wilting symptoms appeared measurements were continued to obtain several points so that a regression curve could be established. From that curve the data on relative water content of leaf at the point of stomatal closure were traced. Chlorophyll contents of leaves were measured at the vegetative growth stage. At maturity, the plants were harvested. The total dry matter and yield components data were then recorded. The data were analyzed statistically using two factor experiment in CRD and LSD tests were followed to evaluate the mean data.
