Effect of Abt Rooting Powder on Rice Under Moisture Stress and Irrigated Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out with ABT rooting powder on a local rice cultivar at BINA, Mymensingh during aman season 1993 to observe the effect of ABT rooting powder on rice under moisture stress and irrigated conditions. The experiment was laid out in split plot with four replications. Plants were grown under moisture stress at 40% saturated soil and irrigated conditions up to booting stage. Then moisture stress was discontinued. Moisture stress increased root-shoot ratio, number of grains per panicle but decreased shoot weight, number of panicle and yield. Increased grain yield was due to the highest number of panicle. It decreased TDM at each growth stage of the plant. No effect was found on harvest index, root weight and 1000-grain weight. ABT rooting powder increased root weight, root shoot ratio and grain yield but decreased 1000-grain weight at the highest level of concentration. No effect of ABT rooting powder was found in TDM production, shoot weight, harvest index, number of panicles per hill.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of ABT rooting powder on rice under moisture stress and irrigated conditions

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted with ABT rooting powder on a local rice cultivar under moisture stress and irrigated conditions. The doses of ABT rooting powder were 0, 10, 15, and 25 ppm. The design of the experiment was split plot with four replications. Moisture stress treatment was assigned in the main plots and ABT rooting powder treatments in the sub-plots. Moisture stress was developed at 40% field capacity and maintained until booting stage and then the moisture stress was broken by rainfall. The unit plot size was 4m x 2m. The row and row distance was 25 cm and plant to plant distance was 15 cm. Data on total dry matter, root-shoot ratio at panicle emergence and TDM at grain filling stage were recorded. At maturity, TDM, yield and yield attributes were also recorded. Data were analyzed statistically and Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) was used to compare the means.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest number of panicle of rice cultivar was found at 15 ppm ABT rooting powder in irrigated plots. The highest grain yield in irrigated plot and the highest root-shoot ratio in moisture stress plot were found at the highest level of concentration (25 ppm).
