A Study on Incidence of External Tumors in Cattle in Mymensingh District of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An attempt was undertaken to determine the incidence of external tumors in cattle. A total of 82 tumor samples were collected by examining 3671 cattle that attended the Veterinary Clinic of Bangladesh Agricultural University during March 2002 to February 2003. Clinical history including age, sex and breed of cattle and gross morphology with location of tumors were recorded. The representative samples were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin, processed, sectioned and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and classified hitopathologically. The overall incidence of tumors was 2.23%. Among the total 82 cases examined, the proportionate incidence of epulis was 7.32%, fibroma 4.88%, lipoma 3.66%, papilloma and fibropapilloma 58.54°%, quamous cell carcinoma 12.20% and other tumor-like growth 13.41 %. Papilloma and fibropapilloma con tituted the highest number of cases (58.54%). Cattle upto 2 years of age (53.66%) and female cattle (54.88%) were more affected. The Shahiwal breed was found to be the most susceptible cattle for neoplastic transformations. The gross and histopathological characters have been discussed.

Objectives:

To determine the incidence of external tumors in cattle.

Methodology:

A total of 82 tumor samples were collected surgically by examining 3,671 cattle of different age and sex groups that attended the Veterinary, Clinic of Bangladesh Agricultural University during the period from March 2002 to February 2003. The tumor samples were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin. The well fixed tissues were washed in running tap water for overnight and then dehydrated through a series of ascending grades of alcohol starting from 70% and ended with three passages in absolute alcohol (one hour in each), cleared in chloroform by two changes (one and a half hour in each) and finally embedded in molten paraffin (melting point 58-60°C) for three hours. The tissues were blocked in paraffin and sectioned at a thickness of 5-6 µm using a rotary microtome (Reichert-Jung, Germany). The cut sections were spread in warm water bath containing gelatin at 38-40 ºC and placed on precleaned grease free glass slides. The sections were stained with routine hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and examined under a microscope to ascertain the type of tumor.

Achievement/Findings:

From our investigation it appears that cross-bred young cattle are more susceptible to neoplastic diseases,and epulis, fibroma, lipoma, papilloma & fibropapilloma and squamous cell carcinoma are frequently occurring external tumors in cattle. Studies on therapeutic aspects of tumors especially on bovine papilloma are in progress.
