Study on the Shrimp and Prawn Post Larvae (pl) Nursing in Hapa

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment has been conducted on the growth and survivability of the post larvae (PL) ,of freshwater prawn, golda and marine shrimp, bagda in hapa for a period of 47 days for bagda and 35 days tor golda. The source of the bagda and golda Pls were Coxes Bazar and Fakirhat, respectively. 80 x 52 x 52 cc hapa was built by Indian blue fine mesh. Initial body length of bagda and golda were 1.5 cm and 0.75 cm, respectively. Bagda PI were fed with wheat flour, coconut oil cake and fish meal. Along with these feed, golda were also fed with Saudi-Bangla Starter-1. Relative net profit was higher in golda PL nursing than that of bagda PL nursing. The result has opened a new window of earning as an alternative income generating activity for the rural poor people, especially for the women.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Three trials were conducted in three villages of Khulna and Bagerhat district. M rosenbergii was nursed at Ramkrishnapur under Domuria upzila of Khulna, and Piljongh under Fakirhat upzila of Bagerhat district. P. monodon was nursed at Digraj under Mongla upzila of Bagerhat District. Hapa were made of Indian blue fine mesh nets. Each hapa was of 80 inches length, 52 inches breadth and 52 inches height. The breadth of the nets was fifty-two inches. The hapa were covered with the same netting to prevent predation from bird. The opening of the hapa was always tied with a long zipper. Two to three inverted date branches were set horizontally on the bottom of the hapa to create more shelters for the PLs during molting. Hapa were smartly tied with four bamboo poles or sticks. A total of thirty-five participants including twenty four female were involved in the trials, Most of the participants were very poor in their community. RUSTIC, following the participant's selection criteria of CAGES project selected them. Hapa for bagda PL were set in 25 decimal perennial brackish water pond. RUSTIC leased the pond for two years. Salinity was 7-8 ppt. Hapa for golda were set in prawn ghers. The neighbors of the farmers leased those ghers. They set the hapa on request. All these ghers were freshwater ghers. Bagda PLs were hatched out in the Modern Hatchery, Cox's Bazar and transported to Jessore by plane and then transported to Mongla by Pickup van. Oxygen bags and Styrofoam boxes were used for transporting PLs. Golda PLs were initially collected from rivers, then transported from Fakirhat to Amvita, Domuria, Khulna in Patils. Hatchery sources PLs are difficult to manage. Hapa for bagda were cleaned daily by hands during bathing. Gas bubbles were removed from inside the hapa by hand splashing. In case of golda, hapas were cleaned once a week by hands. During cleaning one corner of the hapa was untied, a bamboo was put beneath the hapa and then cleaned. Simultaneously all corners were untied and cleaned. In case of bagda, PLs were fed with flour (atta), coconut oil cake and fish meal were used. Feeding was done twice daily. Small feed balls were spread all around the hapa. Increased ration was given in new moon and full moon. Golda were fed with Flour (atta), coconut oil cake, fish meal and Saudi-Bangia Starter-I.
