Growth and Survival of Fry of Shingi at Different Stocking Density

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The growth performances of shingi (Heteropneustes fossilis) in term of gain in body length and weight were evaluated under different stocking densities. Shingi fry with an average initial length of 5.9 ± 0.29 mm and weight of 1.6 ± 0.03 mg were reared under laboratory condition for 28 days at 100 (T-I), 150 (T-II), 200 (T-III) and 250 (T-IV) individual/m² tray. The results of the study indicated that the density related treatments had significant effect on length and body weight gain in H. fossilis. Treatment I and II had similar effect on the growth performance of H. fossilis. Moderate growth rate was observed in treatment III where the fish was reared at 200/tray. Growth rate was lowest in treatment IV (250 fry/tray). Growth and survival rate of fry were inversely correlated with the stocking density. Treatment II (150 fry/tray) proved to be the best in respect of growth performance of H. fossilis.

Objectives:

To examine the effects of different stocking densities of H. fossilis fry on growth and survival.

Methodology:

A 28 day laboratory trial was conducted in eight steel tray of 1m € 1m to evaluate the stocking density effects of shingi fry at Freshwater Station, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, Mymensingh from 16 July to 12 August, 1997. Each selected tray was filled up with 20 liters tap water having provision to pass out the excess water through an outlet after maintaining the required volume of water. Continuous water flow of 0.2 litre/min/tray was maintained. The fry of shingi used in the experiment were produced in the laboratory by induced breeding. Five-day old fry (length 5.9 ± 0.29 mm and weight of 1.6 ± 0.03 mg) were stocked at four stocking densities of 100, 150, 200 and 250 fry/m² in treatments I, II, III and IV, respectively with two replications each. Fry were fed with Tubifex sp. (at 8:00 hours) and artemia (at 4:00 hours) daily upto satiation level. The left over feed and feces were siphoned out from the tray after half an hour of feed supply and dead fish were removed as soon as possible when found. Length, weight and survival of fish were recorded weekly by random sampling. For sampling 20% fry were captured by scoopnet from each treatment, total length and weight were recorded by using a graph paper attached below the petridish and a Metler Toledo, PB 303 four digital balance, respectively. Then fry were released into the respective trays. On the following day the water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO) and free CO² were determined bv HACH water analysis kit. Condition factor of fry was determined at the end of experiment. Analysis of variance was performed to determine the effects of stocking density on the growth and survivability of fry. Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (DNMRT) was used for statistical analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the study indicated that the density related treatments had significant effect on length and body weight gain in H. fossilis. Treatment I and II had similar effect on the growth performance of H. fossilis. Moderate growth rate was observed in treatment III where the fish was reared at 200/tray. Growth rate was lowest in treatment IV (250 fry/tray). Growth and survival rate of fry were inversely correlated with the stocking density. Considering the observed growth and survivability of fry it could be concluded that treatment II containing 150 fry/m² for fry rearing of H.fossilis. The result of this experiment revealed that the growth rate of H. fossilis was highest at the stocking density of 150 fry/m²_.
