Attitude of Subject Matter Officers Towards Agricultural Support Services Project

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Data were collected from 103 randomly selected SMOs in order to determine the attitude of Subject Matter Officers (SMOs) towards Agricultural Support Services Project (ASSP) and to explore the relationships between attitude of SMOs and their eight selected characteristics. All the SMOs of Bangladesh were the target population of the study. It was found that SMOs possessed a moderately favorable attitude towards overall activities of ASSP. Findings also revealed that SMOs academic achievement, job facilities and level of understanding showed a positively significant relationship with their attitude towards ASSP, while training duration and job hindrance showed negatively significant relationship with their attitude towards ASSP. Age, service experience and fatalism did not show any significant relationship.

Objectives:

1. To determine the attitude of SMOs towards ASSP being implemented by DAE.

2. To find out the relationship between attitudes of SMOs towards ASSP and their selected characteristics. The selected characteristics were: age, academic achievement, service experience, training duration, job hindrance, job facilities, fatalism and level of understanding.

Methodology:

In this study, all the SMOs (725, still the date of data collection) working in 460 thanas in Bangladesh were the target population. Data were collected from 103 randomly selected SMOs. The relevant data were collected by the researcher himself with the help of mail questionnaire during the period of 8th July 1996 to 28th September, 1996. Attitude of SMOs was the dependent variable of this study. For measuring the attitude of SMOs, a scale of 22 statements was used. A 5 point likert type scale was used to measure the extent of agreement. By checking anyone of the responses "strongly agree", "agree", "no opinion", "disagree" and "strongly disagree", the respondents indicated their own extent of agreement. Weight assigned to the rating scale were 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 respectively for positive statements and the scoring was reversed for the negative statements. The attitude score of a respondent was determined by adding up the weights for responses against all the 22 statements. Attitude score of a respondent could range from 22 to 110 where, 22 indicated very low favorable and 110, indicated highly favorable attitude. Collected data were coded, compiled, tabulated and analyzed in accordance with the objectives of the study. The SPSS/PC + package in the micro computers was used to analyze data. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentage distribution, mean, standard deviation and range were used to describe the data. In order to examine the relationship between attitude of extension personnel and their selected characteristics, Pearson's Product Moment correlation coefficient tests were used.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings of the study reveal that respondents' overall attitude towards ASSP was moderately favorable. Findings also reveal that academic achievement, and level of understanding of the respondents showed positive relationship with their attitude towards ASSP. So, there is a need to provide opportunities for higher training to SMOs. Job hindrance and job facilities revealed a negative and positive relationship respectively with the attitude of SMOs. So, authority should take proper steps for removing job hindrance factors as well as to increase job facilities which in tern might be helpful to influence the SMOs for better performance.
