A field experiment was conducted at the Agroforestry Farm, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur during April to July 2005 to examine the performance of mungbean varieties grown in association with different multipurpose trees (MPTs). The treatments of the experiment include open field as control (TI), Mango (T2), Ghoraneem (T3) and Ipil-ipil (T4). Five varieties of mungbean, viz VI (BARI Mug-3), V2 (BARI Mug-4), V3 (BARI Mug-5), V4 (BARI Mug-6) and V5 (Local variety) were grown in association with each of the selected trees. BARI Mug-5 was found the best variety over other varieties. BARI Mug-5 was also found superior to other varieties in all yield contributing parameters except the number of pod/plant. In case of tree effect, the highest yield was obtained from TI (open field) followed by Mango. The lowest performance was recorded under ghoraneem. Considering the interaction effects on yield, BARI Mug-5 in open field (V3TI combination) ensured the best performance (1019.00 kg/ha) followed by V3T2 (966.00 kg/ha) combination (BARI Mug-5 under mango). The production of mungbean under the agroforestry species of same aged ranked as mangoc>ipil-ipib>ghoraneem and the varietal ranking was BARI Mug-5> BARI Mug-3> BARI Mug-4> BARI Mug-6> Local variety.

To find out the suitable Mungbean varieties for better association with the above tree species as Agroforestry practice.

The experiment was conducted in the Agroforestry Farm of Hajee Mohammed Danish Science and Technology University, Dinajpur, Bangladesh during April to July 2005.The experimental site was medium high land and the soil was sandy loam in texture belonging to the Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain area under Agro-ecological zone 01. The pH of the soil was 5.1, organic matter content 1.06%, total nitrogen 0.103%,  phosphorus 24.0 µ g/g soil, potassium 0.26me/100 g soil. Treatments of the study were- Factor A: Mungbean varieties viz VI = BARI Mug-3, V2 = BARI Mug-4, V3 = BARI Mug-5, V4 = BARI Mug-6, V5 = Local variety.

Factor B: Agroforestry species TI = Open field (control).T2 = Mango.T3, = Ghoraneem,T4 = Ipil-ipil. There were twenty treatment combinations. The treatments were arranged in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications. The size of unit plot was 2.5m x 2.5 m. Adjacent plots and neighboring blocks were separated by 0.5 m and 3.0 m respectively. The edge of the plot was 25 cm apart from the base of the trees as 3 m X 3 m spacing were maintained for tree plantation. Although the age of the trees ware only two year but the growth was notable. The seeds of different mungbean varieties were sown in line on 29 April 2005. Line to line distance was 30 em and seeds were sown continuously in the furrow of line by hand. Finally 5 cm plant to plant distance was maintained. Each plot contained 9 lines and plant population was 225 in each plot. Matured pods were plucked by hand time to time and final plucking was done at 75 DAS. Recommended doses of fertilizers for Mungbean were used for all varieties of mungbean, 10 ton cow dung, 20 kg N, 60 kg P and 40 kg K per hectare were applied (BARC, 1997). All the cowdung and fertilizers were applied during the final land preparation. Intercultural operations and management practices were done properly throughout the season as per requirement. No pesticides were used to control the insect pest and diseases as there were no out break of pest and diseases. For data collection 10 representative sample plants were selected. Matured pods were collected time to time from the plants which were selected previously. Data on yield contributing characters as well as yields of the studied varieties of mungbean were recoded. The analysis of variance for each of the studied character was done by F (variance ratio) test and means separations were adjusted by DMRT test at 1 % and 5% level of significance.
