The experiment was conducted in six nursery ponds of 40 m2 each with 4 days old sharpunti (Puntius sarana) spawn of at three stocking densities of 1.25. 1.5 and 1.75 million/ha with two replication for each. Supplementary feed comprising of rice bran and mustard oil cake (1: 1) was provided twice daily at the rate of 4 kg/million spawn for the first seven days and was increased by 3 kg/million spawn every week thereafter. Pond" were manured with cowdung at the rate of 2 tons/ha at weekly intervals. The mean survival of fingerlings were 75.59%,65.58% and 57.06% at 1.25, 1.50 and 1.75 million/ha stocking densities, respectively. The final mean lengrh of 6.0 1 cm, 5.16 cm and 4.80 cm and final mean weight of 2.58 g, 1.90 g and 1.65 g were obtained from the above three stocking densities, respectively. After 8 weeks of rearing. the mean net production of fingerlings obtained were 2476.77. 1907.50 and 1666.25 kg/ha at 1.25, 1.50 and 1.75 million spawn/ha stocking denvitics. respectively. On the basis of the growth performances observed, stocking at 1.25 million spawn/ha appeared 1\) be the most efficient density for rearing sharpunti fingerlings in single stage nursing.

To be aimed at optimizing the stocking densities in respect to survival and growth of sharpunti fingerlings.

The experiment was conducted in six nursery ponds of 40 m2 each, situated at the Freshwater Station, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, Mymensingh from 4 June to 30 July, 2002. The ponds were prepared by draining and drying to eradicate weed fishes and lime was applied @ 250 kg/ha. Three days after liming, the ponds were filled with ground water to a depth of one meter. Seven days subsequent to liming, the ponds were manured with cattle dung @ 2 tons/ha. Five days after manuring, dipterex was applied @ 1.0 ppm to kill insects and large predatory zooplankton like cladocerans and copepods. One day after the application of dipterex, the ponds were stocked with 4 days old spawn of average length 5.40 mm and weight 1.58 mg at 3 stocking densities, viz. 1.25, 1.5 and 1.75 million/ha designated as treatments A, Band C respectively with two replications for each. Spawn were counted manually and total length and weight were recorded using a graph paper attached with petridish and a Melter AJ 100 digital balance respectively. For acclimatization to the new environment, the spawn were not fed on the first day. From the second day of stocking, the spawn were fed twice daily with a mixture of finely ground rice bran (50%) and mustard oil cake (50%) at the rate of 4.0 kg/million of stocked spawn for the first 7 days and was increased by 3.0 kg/million spawn, every seven days thereafter. The feeds were broadcast dry on the water surface. In addition, the ponds were fertilized with cattle dung @ 1.0 ton/ha in each seven days interval. The ponds were sampled at weekly intervals by dragging a fine meshed hapa net to examine the growth (length and weight) of fry. The physico-chemical parameters of pond water viz. temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen. alkalinity and secchi-disk transparency were measured at weekly intervals. Plankton samples were collected at weekly intervals using a No. 55 bolting silk plankton net and later analyzed in laboratory for qualitative and quantitative estimation of phytoplankton and zooplankton. During the collection of plankton sample, few number of spawn were caught but they were excluded from the count. The ponds were harvested first by repeated netting until the ponds dried up. Statistical analysis was performed by one way analysis of variance. Comparison between treatment means was carried out by analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Dunean's Multiple Range Test. The level for statistical significance was set at p<0.05.

In the present study, it is clear that the survival and growth of the fingerlings of sharpunti were inversely related to the stocking densities of spawn. But in respect to total production the stocking density of 1.25 million spawn/ha showed the best results than both the higher stocking rates of 1.5 and 1.75 million spawn/ha. Therefore, stocking density of more than 1.50 million spawn/ha may not be advisable in rearing sharpunti fingerlings in single stage nursing.
