Hypoderma Bovis Infestation in Imported Cattle in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The young larvae were whitish to yellow in colour, measuring 9 to 25 mm in length, while the full grown larvae were brown to dark brown in colour, measuring 26 to 30 mm. the diameter of the swollen lesions along the back varied from 1.5 to 6.5 (x = 2.97 cm +- 0.04 SE). The nuber of larvae recovered from a single cattle ranged between 7 and 28 (x = 15.71 +- 0.30 SE). Removal of the larvae and spraying of the wounds with 1.5% trichlorfon was sufficient to cure the animals from the ailment. No infestation with Hypoderma was seen in any exotic cattle of this farm thereafter. Endemic cases have been found to occure in cattle even in the southern hemisphere, as in Chile. It is obligatory to take quarantine measures in importing exotic animals, because with the imported animals some deadly new diseases may be introduced in this country.

Objectives:

To identify the Hypoderma bovis in imported animals of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

In between mid February to April 1990, some raised swellings developed on the back of 21 Holstein-Friesian cattle imported from Spain in December 1989. Examination of the swellings revealed maggot infestations. The maggots were squeezed out through the breathing holes with gentle pressure by thumbs and forefingers and identified as H. Bovis. The descriptions were followed in identifying the species. Both young and mature larvae of H. bovis were recovered.
