Effect of Pressmud Along with in Organic Fertilizers on Sugarcane Yield and Fertility Status of Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted for two consecutive years at Darsana, Chuadanga to assess the effect of pressmud along¹ with chemical fertilizers on soil Fertility and yield contributing parameters of sugarcane. The experimental field belongs to High Ganges River Floodplain was near neutral in reaction and deficient in organic mater, N, P and S. Application of press mud + chemical fertilizer over farmer's practice as well as recommended dose of N, P, K, S, and Zn increased cane yield. The use of pressmud improved soil fertility by increasing organic carbon, total N, available P and exchangeable K. The results suggest that the incorporation of pressmud in sugarcane soil @ 12.5 t ha^-1 with recommended dose of 160 kg of n, 110 kg P₂0₅, 148 kg S, and 10 kg Zn ha^-1 slightly improved soil physicochemical conditions and thereby rais profitability and sustainability of sugarcane production.

Objectives:

To study the effect of pressmud along with inorganic fertilizers on cane yield as well as fertility status of High Ganges River Floodplain soils of Chuadanga, Bangladesh.

Methodology:

This experiment was conducted in two different grower's field on sandy loam soil at Darsana, Chuadanga under High Ganges River Floodplain during two consecutive cropping season of 1994-95 and 1995-96. The analysis of initial soil was carried out before transplanting to determine its nutrient status and other properties. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with four replications, having 8-m x 6-m plot size, The treatments were as: T₁- control (no fertilizer), T₂ - Farmer's practice, T_3-T₂ + Pressmud @ 25 t ha^-1, T₄ - Recommended doses of fertilizer (160 N, 110 P₂0₅, 148 K₂0, 40 S, and 10 Zn ha^-1), T₅-T₄ + Pressmud @ 12.5 t ha^-1and,_T₆-T₄ + Pressmud @ 25 t ha^-1. Thirty days old settling of sugarcane (verity lsd 21) were transplanted in November each year and harvested after 12 months. Full dose of phosphorus, sulphet, zinc and pressmud were applied as basal and thoroughly mixed with soils. One third of nitrogen and half of potassium were applied after 20-30 days of transplanting, while the remaining Nand K fertilizer were applied at tillering stage. The recommended management practices were adopted, Data on growth parameters like tillers, rnillable cane, yield and quality (brix per cent) were recorded and the analysis of post harvest soil was also carried out. Soil textural glass electrode pH hydrometer method and soil pH was measured in a 1 : 2.5 soil water suspension by glass electrode pH meter. Total N was determined by macro Kjeldahl procedure and organic carbon by Walkley and Black method. Available soil P was extracted with 0.5M NaHC0₃ and the amount was determined by Spectrophotometer. Exchangeable K (NH₄0Ac extractable) was determined by flame photometer and' available S by turbid metric method, Collected data were analyzed statistically following the Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

The results of soil fertility, growth parameters and cane yield indicated that the integrated use of recommended dose of chemical fertilizers (160 N, 110 P₂0₅, 148 K₂0, 40 Sand 10Zn kg ha^-1) and 12.5 t ha^-1 pressmud may be suggested for sustainable sugarcane production in the High Ganges River Floodplain soils of Chuadanga, Bangladesh.
