Chemical Control of Ufra Disease of Rice: a Simple Profitability Analysis

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Multiple field trials were conducted to determine the efficacy of Furataf 5G, Arodhan 5G and Biestern 5G @ 1.0 kg a.i/ha with standard check, Furadan 5G in two ecosystems and three seasons viz. November to April irrigated ecosystem (Boro), April to July (Transplanted Aus) and July to October (Transplanted Aman) rain-fed lowland ecosystems during 1995 to 1997. All the test chemicals are effective to control the ufra disease of rice and increased yield in comparison with Furadan 5G. In respect of all seasons, Furataf 5G, Arodhan 5G, Biestern 5G increased yield recovery 2.29- 4.15, 2.59-3.40 and 3.06-3.86 t/ha in three rice genotypes respectively, which was more or loss similar to Furadan 5G (3.09-3.65 t/ha). Yield reduces due to ufra disease was 79.48% in T. Aman, while it was 93.88% and 89.11% in T. Aus and Boro rice. Application of Furataf 5G, Arodhan 5G, Biestern 5G and Furadan 5G showed 14.44–15.74, 10.09–14.31 and 12.45 -14.92 times profitable in case of T. Aus, T. Aman and Boro respectively over the control (Diseased). Simple economic analysis also revealed that ufra control with the use of three chemicals in soil treatments is profitable. Thus three chemicals may also be used as alternative to Furadan 5G.

Objectives:

To develop cost effective control measure against Ufra disease of rice.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted in three seasons, Boro, (November to April), Transplanted Aus (April to July) and Transplanted Aman (July to October) under two ecosystems: rainfed low land (April to October) and irrigated (November to April). A total of four experiments were conducted at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) farm, Gazipur from 1995-97 to evaluate four granular chemicals, namely Furataf 5G, Arodhan 5G, Biesteran 5G and Furadan 5G in controlling rice ufra disease in three seasons, Boro, Transplanted Aus (T. Aus), Transplanted Aman (T. Aman). The variety BR3 was used in the Boro and T. Aus and BR11 in T. Aman seasons. The nematicides were the same in Boro T. Aus and T. Aman seasons. They were applied at 1 kg a.i./ha at transplanting of ufra infected seedlings in 2 m x 2.5 m size plot at 25 cm x 15 cm spacing. Each plot surrounded by 20- 25 cm high and plastered bund to prevent spreading of nematode. Thirty five day old seedling of cv. BR3 or BR11 with visible chlorotic ufra symptom on the leaf sheath were transplanted in nematicides treated plot. The nematicides were incorporated into the soil at transplanting of ufra-infected seedlings. Two control treatments (healthy and diseased) were also included in the experiments. The experiment was set up following the RCB design with four replications for each treatment. After harvest, the panicles were categorized ufra 1= panicle completely enclosed in leaf sheath, ufra 2= partially emerged panicle but unfilled grain and ufra 3 = completely emerged panicle with unfilled grain 9. Yield increased over control was also determined for each season. BCR is an important economic analysis tool that shows the benefit/cost ratio or profitability index. The benefit/cost ratio, B/C or BCR, is the present value of an investment’s benefits divided by the present value of the initial cost. Average profitability analysis of four nematicides was done in the on-farm trials of average of each ecosystem. Data on % damage tiller, ufra 3, total ufra (damage tiller+ufra1+ufra2+ufra3) and healthy panicles and yield (t/ha) were taken for convenient of the study. Yield increased using nematicides over control (diseased) was also determined for each season. The data obtained for different characters were statistically analyzed to find out the significance of the difference among the treatments. The significance of the difference among the treatments means was estimated by the least significant difference (LSD) test at 5% level of probability.

Achievement/Findings:

On the basis of our above findings, we concluded that the application of Furataf 5G, Arodhan 5G, Biestern 5G at 1.0 kg a.i/ha in soil treatments could be cost-effective for the management of ufra disease. Yield losses occurred due to this disease were 79.48, 93.88 and 89.11% in T. Aman, T. Aus and Boro rice, respectively. Cost benefit ratio indicate that there is no significant difference among the Furataf 5G, Arodhan 5G, Biestern 5G and Furadan 5G. Considering the results we may conclude that Furataf 5G, Arodhan 5G, Biestern 5G can be used as alternative to Furadan 5G.
