Selection of Disease Resistant Materials Against Bb, Shb and Blast Diseases

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was carried out during 2014-15 at BRRI west byed farm, Gazipur to identify BB, ShB and Blast resistant sources in advance breeding lines.Advanced breeding materials were tested against virulent isolates of the respective pathogen. In T. Aman season all the materials were tested against BB, ShB and Blast pathogen; but in Boro season, materials were tested against BB and Blast. Blast resistant materials were screened only at seedling stage, and BB and ShB at maximum tillering stage. In each case, local resistant and susceptible check was grown along with test materials. In case of Blast disease, 15 day old seedlings were inoculated using spore suspension (10⁵spores/ml) of Pyricularia grisea. Most virulent isolate (Ba015) of blast was used in this experiment. Plants were incubated in dew chamber immediately after inoculation for 24 hrs and then put it in the glasshouse maintaining temperature 25 °C. Data on disease severity were collected 7 days after inoculation. Mean data on disease severity was converted into following scale (0-9), SES 2002, IRRI. In case of BB, plants at miximum tillering stage were inoculated with most virulent isolate of major race (BXO9). Data on percent leaf area damage were collected 14-21 days after inoculation. Mean data of each entry was converted in to disease severity scale (0-9), SES 2002, IRRI. Again, in case of ShB, supplied materials were inoculated with local Rhizoctonia solani culture grown on PDA medium at PI stage. Eight hills were inoculated from central area at random. New fungicides were sprayed at their recommended dose twice; first at 5 days after inoculation and second at 7 days after first spray. Data on relative lesion height (RLH) was taken at dough stage. Mean data of each entry was converted in to disease severity scale (0-9), SES 2002, IRRI. In case of T. Aman 2014 season, out of 52 materials, seven materials (OM 1490, IRBB 21, IRBB 65, IR 77542-551-1-1-1-1-2, BR 7965-6-1-4-9, BR 829-16-2, and BR 7941-41-2-2-2-4) showed moderately resistant reaction against Xanthomonas oryzae; while 03 materials (BR 7472-16-2-12-1, IR 73055-8-1-1-3-1, and IR 78761-B-SATB1-28-3-2B) showed moderately tolerant reaction against Rhizoctonia solani pathogen; and 03 materials (BR6848-3B-12, IR73055-8-1-1-3-1, and IR 78761-B-SAB1-28-3-26) showed moderately tolerant reaction to Pyricularia grisea. Again, in Boro 2014-15 season, out of 71 materials; 06 materials (BR 7783-AC6-3-2-2-1, BR 8096-48-2-2-4, BR 7369-10-5-2-3, HHZ11-DT7-SAL1-SAL1, BR 7840-54-3-2-1, and BR 7879-17-2-4-HR3-P1) showed moderately resistant reaction against Xanthomonas oryzae; while 05 materials (IR 77734-93-2-3-2, BR 7369-10-5-2-3, BR 7372-35-3-3-HR9, HHZ6-SAL3-Y1-SUB2, and ir 77092-2R-B-10) showed moderately tolerant reaction against Pyricularia grisea.
