Selection of Inger Materials Against Blast and Bacterial Blight (bb) Diseases

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was carried out to identify new resistant source(s) against BB and blast for developing durable resistant rice variety in Bangladesh. INGER materials of IRRI were tested against both blast and BB diseases. A total of 64 INGER materials were screened against blast (Pyricularia oryzae) pathogen including local resistant check Kumragoir and susceptible check BRRI dhan34. The experiment was conducted under artificial inoculated condition during T. Aman season 2014. Seedlings at 15 days old were inoculated using spore suspension (10⁵spores/ml) of Pyricularia grisea. Most virulent isolate (Ba015) of blast was used in this experiment. Plants were incubated in dew chamber immediately after inoculation for 24 hrs and then put it in the glasshouse maintaining temperature 25 °C. Data on disease severity were collected 7 days after inoculation. Mean data on disease severity was converted into following scale (0-9), SES 2002, IRRI. In case of BB, a total of 61 materials were screened against bacterial blight (Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae) pathogen including local resistant check Kumragoir and susceptible check Purbachi. The experiment was conducted under inoculated field condition during T. Aman season, 2014. Plants were inoculated with most virulent isolate of major race (BXO9) at maximum tillering stage. Data on percent leaf area damage were collected 14-21 days after inoculation. Mean data of each entry was converted in to disease severity scale (0-9), SES 2002, IRRI. Out of 64 materials, only one IRBL 9-W/RL showed resistant reaction (R) (disease severity scale 1) against Pyricularia grisea; while 21 materials showed moderately resistant (MR) reaction (disease severity scale 3), 31 showed moderately susceptible (MS) reaction (disease severity scale 5), 05 showed susceptible reaction (disease severity scale 7) and 06 showed highly susceptible (HS) reaction (disease severity scale 9) against rice blast pathogen. Again, Among the 61 INGER materials, 03 materials (IRBB 21, IRBB 65; and IRBB 66) showed resistant reaction (R) (disease severity scale 1) against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae; while 17 showed moderately resistant reaction (MR) (disease severity scale 3), 21 showed moderately susceptible reaction (disease severity scale 5), 11 showed susceptible reaction (disease severity scale 7) and 09 showed highly susceptible (disease severity scale 9) to BB pathogen.
