Integrated Rice Disease Management at Farmers’ Field for Enhancing Productivity

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Demonstration were carried out for rice disease management at farmers’ field level with a view to enhancing overall productivity of the country. BRRI recommended disease management practices were demonstrated in farmers` field of Barisal and Rangpur region. Integrated disease management practices of Sheath blight and Blast were demonstrated. BRRI recommended practice which include all cultural (water, weed and fertilizers) and chemical (fungicide spray) management practices as BRRI guidelines and rest one was Farmers’ practice (FP) where farmers’ followed their own practices to grow rice A total of twenty three demonstrations were executed in greater Barisal and Rangpur regions under IAPP project in the year 2014-15. These demonstrations enhanced farmer’s knowledge and skill to a great extent to manage rice sheath blight and blast disease in the respective area. In T. Aman/14 season, the highest blast disease incidence (91%) was obtained in BRRI dhan34 at farmer’s practice while least disease incidence (17%) was recorded in the same variety at BRRI managed plot in Barisal region. Due to BRRI management intervention 81.32% blast disease decreased and 38.74% yield advantage was achieved. Again, in Rangpur region, due to BRRI management intervention 82.35% disease decreased than farmer’s practice and a total of 14.15% yield advantage was achieved. In Boro 2014-15 season, highest blast disease incidence 42.16% was obtained in BRRI dhan29 at farmer’s practice while least disease incidence was recorded as 8.29% in the same variety. Here, due to BRRI management intervention 80.34% disease decreased along with 30.95% yield advantage was achieved. Again, in Rangpur region, due to BRRI management intervention 85.39% disease decreased and 08.43% yield advantage was achieved due to BRRI management intervention.

Methodology:

BRRI recommended disease management practices were demonstrated in farmers` field of Barisal and Rangpur region. Integrated disease management practices of Sheath blight and Blast were demonstrated. Area of each demonstration was around 33 decimal, 75% of demonstration plot were occupied by BRRI recommendation practice and 25% farmers` practice. Two practices were followed; first one was, BRRI recommended practice which include all cultural (water, weed and fertilizers) and chemical (fungicide spray) management practices as BRRI guidelines and rest one was Farmers’ practice (FP) where farmers’ followed their own practices to grow rice (includes close spacing; don’t follow clean cultivation, use low fertilizers dose rather than BRRI recommended dose except urea and no idea about disease and how to manage disease).
