The present study was conducted at the two locations of coastal agro-ecosystem of Patuakhali under the Field Laboratory of Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) and Regional Jute Research institute Kalapara, Patuakhali during the period from March to September 2012. The present research work was to evaluate the performance of twelve cultivars under two locations of coastal areas in respect of growth, yield attributes and yield characters under the AEZ-13. Twelve cultivars of Jute were local (V1), C–2234 (V2), C–3468 (V3), C–3473 (V4), C–2596 (V5), C–3069 (V6), C–3070 (V7), C–7370 (V8), C–2761 (V9), C–2593 (V10), CVE–3 (V11) and C–3465 (V12) and two locations were Kalapara and Dumki under coastal agro-ecosystem of Patuakhali. The experiment consist of two factors and was laid out in a completely randomized block design with three replications where cultivars and locations were used as level factor A and B, respectively. The collected data were analyzed statistically and means were adjudged by DMRT at 5% level of probability. The data were collected on plant height (m), green weight with and without leaves (g plant–1), stick weight (g plant–1) and fibre weight (g plant–1) at harvest. Results revealed that the growth and yield character viz. plant height, green weight without and with leaves and also stick and fibre dry production varied significantly among the cultivars. Among the cultivars, the variety C–3069 produce the tallest plant (3.455 m), higher green weight without leaves (286.4 g plant–1) and with leaves (336.3 g plant–1) leaves, greater production of dry stick (41.40 g plant–1) and dry fibre (18.35 g plant–1). Similarly, between two coastal agro-ecosystem of Patuakhali, Dumki produces significantly higher growth and fibre production than Kalapara. As a result, Dumki recorded the tallest plant (3.354 m); higher green weight without leaves (230.5 g plant–1) and with leaves (271.9 g plant–1); dry weight of stick (35.36 g plant–1) and fibre (17.45 g plant–1).  Interaction between studied twelve cultivars and two locations also showed significant variation among the studied characters where as the cultivar C-3069 interaction with the coastal area of Dumki location were most effective and they produces the tallest plant (3.620s m); higher green weight without leaves (292.0 g plant–1) and with leaves (332.50 g plant–1); highest weight of dry stick (48.0 g plant–1) and dry fibre (22.71 g plant–1) than other interactions. Among all combinations C-3069 variety performed best in dumki location Jute cultivation than other interactions of the present study in AEZ–13.

1.To find out the most suitable cultivars to observe the field performance of  twelve cultivars;

2.To select the most suitable production area in the coastal region of Patuakhali;

3.To observe the most effective interaction between cultivar and locations in respect of yield jute

The experiment was conducted at the research field of Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Patuakhali during the period from March to September 2012 to find out the most suitable cultivar among the twelve cultivars and also the select the most productive area between two area under coastal agro–ecosystem of Patuakhali of Bangladesh on the basis of growth, stick and fibre yield of Jute.

Planting materials

As planting materials, the seeds of twelve Jute cultivars were used for this study which was collected from the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI), Farmgate, Dhaka and also from the local farmer of the Patuakhali District. So, the experiment consisted of twelve Jute cultivars as level Factor A. They are as follows:

  1. Local (V1)
  2. C–2234 (V2)
  3. C–3468 (V3)
  4. C–3473 (V4)
  5. C–2596 (V5)
  6. C–3069 (V6)
  7. C–3070 (V7)
  8. C–7370 (V8)
  9. C–2761 (V9)
  10. C–2593 (V10)
  11. CVE–3 (V11) and
  12. C–3465 (V12)

    Two locations viz. Dumki and Kalapara under coastal region of Patuakhali were used for this study as treatments and level factor B. These two areas were salinity affected in case of the coastal region.

    Experimental design and layout

    Twelve cultivars of Jute were used as planting materials and two locations under coastal region of Patuakhali were used as treatment. The two factors experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Twelve Jute cultivars were used in each location as treatments in 72 plots randomly where three plots were used for each Jute cultivar and for each location. The unit plot size was 4.0 m × 2.5 m. The block to block and plot to plot spaced were 1.0 m and 0.60 m respectively.

    Data collection

    After harvest, firstly 10 random selected plants of a plot were cut at the ground level with sickle and bundled and tagged carefully for recording necessary some morphological parameters. This process was followed for all the plots individually. The harvested plants of each treatment were brought to the cleaned threshing floor and capsules were separated from plants by hand and allowed them for drying well under bright sunlight. Rest of the plants of the plots was bundles as per treatments and soaking in pond water for retting. After retting fibre were separated from the stick. Finally, separated stick and fibre weights were taken on individual plot basis at moisture content of 12% and converted into g plant–1.

The cultivar C–3069 had more efficient on the growth, yield and yield attributing traits among the cultivars in salinity affected coastal area of Patuakhali. However, Dumki also showed better Jute cultivation coastal area than Kalapara for the favourable soil characteristics, sympathetic salinity level and also the suitable climatic condition. As a result, the Jute cultivar C–3069 gave high tolerant performance for salinity affected coastal agro–ecosystem soil condition as well as higher stick and fibre yield were observed. It indicated that the Jute variety C–3069 would be most suitable variety and Dumki showed better cultivation coastal area than Kalapara and their interaction (C–3069 and Dumki) also greater perform for Jute cultivation under the AEZ–13 or the salinity affected coastal agro–ecosystem condition of Patuakhali of Bangladesh. So, I strongly recommended that the Jute cultivar C–3069, Dumki coastal region and their interaction would be more successful productive factor compare to other Jute cultivars, coastal region and their interactions, respectively.
