A study was conducted at the Field Laboratory of Agronomy Department, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Patuakhali during the period from November 2012 to March 2013 to find out the effective sowing time and variety on the yield performance of two chickpea variety under irrigated condition. The experiment was carried out with two varieties (V1=BARI Chola 2 and V2= BARI Chola 4), three sowing time (S1=10 November, S2=20 November, and S3=30 November) with four replications. The experiment was laid out RCBD design with four replications. Genotypic effect was significantly influenced the morpho-physiological, yield and yield contributing characters between two varieties ( BARIChola 4 most characters than BARI Chola 2). The plant of BARI Chola 4 at 90 days after sowing produced the highest plant height (38.542 cm), number of branches per plant (20.317),canopy coverage (2361.692 cm2)  and highest number of pods/plant (62.567), highest seed yield (6.141g/plant ), higher TDM (8.449 g), 100-seed weight (13.893 g), higher seed yield (1719.408 kg/ha) stover yield(2365.767 kgha-1), biological yield(4085.173 kgha-1) and harvest index (41.895%) were obtained under irrigated condition where as BARI Chola 2 recorded the lower performance in respect of plant height ,(36.825 cm), number of branch (17.050), canopy coverage(2063.619 cm2), number of pods/plant (50.117), yield/plant (5.737g), TDM (8.208 g), 100-seed weight (13.357g), seed yield (1606.383 kg/ha), stover yield(2298.767 kgha-1), biological yield(3904.667 kgha-1) and harvest index (40.964%). Sowing time significantly influenced all characteristics of the study. The  highest plant height (40.69 cm) and maximum number of branch (24) were obtained in mid-November sowing while early sowing (10 November) recorded the lowest plant height (35.14 cm) and minimum number of branch (14.32). Optimum sowing time(20 November) produced maximum  pods/plant (75.63), TDM (8.844 g), 100-seed weight (14.09g) as well as higher seed yield (1930.8 kg/ha), stover yield(2476.2 kgha-1), biological yield(4407.0 kgha-1) and harvest index (43.81%) and early sowing of 10 November  showed lowest result on pods/plant (75.63 ), TDM (7.736 g), 100-seed weight (13.27 g) as well as higher seed yield (1424.4 kg/ha), stover yield(2166.15 kgha-1), biological yield(3590.55 kgha-1) and harvest index (39.52% ).The highest harvest index was recorded in BARI Chola 4 between two varieties. Interaction effect was also significantly influenced among the all characters where mid sowing (20 November) BARI Chola 4 recorded the highest TDM, pods/plant, 100-seed weight, seed yield, stover yield, biological yield than that of other combination. So, therefore, the variety BARI Chola 4 and 20 November sowing would be suitable variety and appropriate sowing time for obtaining the higher production of chickpea under irrigated condition. The study revealed that the performance of BARI Chola 4 was better in respect of pod/plant, yield and harvest index in the variety under irrigated condition.

1.To study the varietal differences growth, yield and yield attributes point of view.

2.To determine the optimum sowing time of comparable yield of chickpea.

3.To assess the considered effect of variety and sowing time for maximum production of chickpea.

The field experiment was conducted at the Field Laboratory of the Department of Agronomy, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Patuakhali during the period of November 2012 to March 2013 to study on yield and yield contributing characters of chickpea varieties including three sowing times in coastal region of Bangladesh.

The experiment consisted of two chickpea varieties and three sowing time and was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The size of each plot was 10 m2 (4 × 2.5 m) where replication to replication distance was 1 m and plot to plot distance was 50 cm, respectively. Row to row distance was 40 cm and seed to seed distance was 10 cm, respectively. So, the total plots were 24.

Factor A: Varieties (Two)

  1. BARI Chola 2
  2. BARI Chola 4

Factar B: Sowing time (Three)

The seed were sown on three sowing dates. They were -

  1. 10 November,2012
  2. 20 November,2012
  3. 30 November,2012

    Data collection

Data was collected on different crop and yield contributing characters as follows:

  4. Plant height (cm)
  5. Total number of branch plant -1
  6. Total dry matter(g)
  7. Canopy coverage(cm2)
  8. Number of pod  plant -1
  9. Number of seed pod-1
  10. Yield plant-1 (g)
  11. 100- seed weight (g)
  12. Stover yield (kg ha-1)
  13. Biological yield (kg ha-1)
  14. Seed  yield (kg ha-1)
  15. Harvest index (%)

    Procedure of data collection

Data was collected on twelve parameters of the experiment. A brief outline of data collection procedure is given below.

    Plant height (cm):

Plant height was measured in centimeter by a meter scale at different stage from the ground surface to the top of the main shoot of the randomly selected five plants from each plot.

    Number of branch:

Number of branches of individual plants was counted separately.

    Total dry matter:

To measure the total dry matter production of five plants were taken from each plot. The plants were dried in oven at 700c for 72 hours and weighed. The oven dried samples were weighed for dry matter production.

    Canopy coverage:

Canopy coverage was measured at different stage. For calculating canopy coverage, at least two diagonal measurements were taken placing a centimeter scale over the canopy of a plant to determine the canopy. Later, radius of the canopy was measured from the diameter and mean value of the radius was used to calculate canopy coverage.

    Canopy coverage (cm2) =πr2

           Where,

                        Π=3.14

r =radius of the canopy (cm)

    Number of pods plant–1

Pods were separated from sample plants and the total number of pods were counted and recorded.

    Number of seeds pod–1

Number of seeds pod–1 was counted and recorded after harvesting of the crop from the ten randomly selected pods from five pre–selected plants.

    Hundred seed weight:

Hundred sun dried seeds were counted from the seed stock obtained from the five sample plants of each plot and their weight (g) was taken in by using an electric balance.

    Seed yield:

After harvesting, the seed were removed from the separated pods and then dried in sun for 2–3 days. Finally, seed weights were taken of individual plot at 12% moisture content and converted to kg ha–1.

    Stover yield:

Stover obtained from each unit plot including the stover yield of five samples was dried in the sun and weighed to record the stover yield of each plot.

    Biological yield

The biological yield was calculated with the following formula–

Biological yield= seed yield + stover yield

    Harvest index:

Harvest index is the ratio of seed yield (i.e. grain yield) to stover yield and was calculated with the following formula (Gardner et al. 1985).

    Harvest index (%) =x 100

The variety BARI Chola 4 and mid sowing (20 November) singly or interaction significantly influenced on most of the yield and yield characters of chickpea at the studied region of Patuakhali (AEZ 13) under irrigated condition. Early sowing reduces the crop yield but late sowing produce intermediate crop yield under irrigated condition. So, the variety BARI Chola 4 and 20 November sowing time would be suitable variety and appropriate sowing time for higher production of chickpea under irrigated condition. However, further experiment at other AEZs would be necessary to validate these findings.
