Effect of Planting Time on Growth and Yield of Broccoli (brassica Oleracea L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at University Research Field, Patuakhali Science & Technology University, Patuakhali, Bangladesh under the Agro-ecological Zone 13 (Ganges Tidal Floodplain) during the August 2011 to April 2012 to find out the optimum planting time on broccoli production. Ten planting time, viz., (i) August 15, (ii) August 30, (iii) September 15, (iv) September 30, (v) October 15, (vi) October 30, (vii) November 15, (viii) November 30, (ix) December 15 and (x) December 30 were included in the study. All the growth parameters except numbers of leaves per plant were not influenced by planting time. Maximum numbers of leave per plant was recorded in October 15 planting and the minimum in August 15 planting all the treatment were statistically similar in this respects. Yield and yield contributing characters were significantly influenced by the treatments. The maximum yield was recorded in October 15 planting followed by October 30 and November 15. The highest yield (24.17) and the lowest yield (10.8 t/ha) recorded from October 30 and August 15 respectively

Objectives:

To determine the optimum planting time for the commercial production of broccoli in Patuakhali, Bangladesh region.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the University Research Field, Patuakhali Science & Technology University, Patuakhali, Bangladesh under the Agro-ecological Zone 13 (Ganges Tidal Floodplain) during the August 2011 to April 2012. Ten planting time, viz., August 15, August 30, September 15, September 30, October 15, October 30, November 15, November 30, December 15 and December 30 were included as the treatment of the experiment. The variety used in the experiment was “Green Harmony”. The treatments of the experiment were designed in randomized complete block design with three replication. Unit plot size was 6m x 1m. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted. The seedling were transplanted on according to the treatment in double row planting system. The 10 tons of cow dung, 200 kg of TSP, 75kg MoP, 4 kg of Boric Acid and 125 kg of urea per hectare were applied during final land preparation. The rest of 250 kg of urea, and 150 kg of MP per hectare were splited three at 15, 30 and 45 days after planting. All the intercultural operations like weeding, mulching, irrigation and plant protection measures were taken as deemed suitable. Data on different growth and yield component were collected from ten, randomly selected plants per lots and analyzed as per statistical procedure.

Achievement/Findings:

Environmental factors such as temperature, rainfall with satisfactory soil moisture played an important role in growth and yield of broccoli. So considering all resources the results revealed that October to early November was recommended as the optimum planting time for maximum yield and commercial cultivation of broccoli in Patuakhali, Bangladesh.
