Study on the Improvement of Soil Fertility by the Cultivation of Different Legumes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five Leguminous species namely Sesbania canabina, Glycine max Phaseolus mungo, Phaseolus radiatus and Vigna cotjang were selected for comparative study of an addition of nitrogen to the soil. Maximum number of nodules per plant was found in Phaseolus radiatus while maximum dry matter content of nodules per plant was observed in Vigna catjang. Capsicum frutescens was cultivated in rotation in cultivation with five legumes and in all cases the result was better than the control. The maximum yield which was about three times was found in the plot previously grown with Vigna catjang.

Objectives:

To investigate the ability of five common leguminous species to add nitrogen to the soil.

Methodology:

Five leguminous species e. g., Sesbenia canabina (pers i) Glvcine max (L.), Ph- eseolus mungo (L.), Phaseolus radiatus (L.) and Vigna catjang (Endl.) were taken for the purpose. The experimental field was divided into two equal blocks each having 36 plots. Equal amount of seeds (100 gms) of each species was sown in each plot. Each plot measures 4 square metres. The experiment was laid out in a randomised block design with six replication. Equal number of control plots was maintained. The dry weight of nodules and plants was taken. The nodules and plants were dried in the oven at 8C^oc for 48 hours. In all the plots seedlings of Capsicum frutescens were subsequently grown maintaining a distance of 20 cm. in both row to row and plant to plant.

Achievement/Findings:

The experimental results revealed that the highest number of nodules per plants was found to be 56 in Phaseolus raJiatus and maximum weight of nodules 34.3 mg. per plant was found in Vigan catjang. The highest increase of nitrogen and organic matters were found in plots grown with Phaseolus radiatus and Vigna catjang respectively.

In soil with nodules alone best performance of Capsicum frutescens was found to be 15.9 9m. per plant in plot grown with Vigna catjang and in nodules plus green menure the best yield which was 28.3 gm. per plant was similarly found related with Vigna catjang. Thus Vigna catlang cultivation followed by Capsicum frutescens cultivation appears to give more than the double production than the control. However, all legumes cultivation followed by the cultivation of Capsicum frutescens is better than the control.
