Marketing of Groundnut in a Selected Area of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The main focus of the study is to assess the groundnut marking by analyzing the marketing channels, costs, margins and existing problems. Data were colleted from farmers as well as from traders to get information on the present marketing system of groundnut. The net margins of farias, beparis, aratders and retailers were Tk. 17.73, 17.91, 17.64 and 18.33 per quintal, respectively. The net return of the farmers as net margin was calculated at Tk. 6.76 per quintal. Major problems related to groundnut farming and trading were unavailability of input in proper time, high input cost, lack of capital, lack of communication facilities. Improvement of roads and communications, timely repayment of price by the traders, price stability, timely supply of sufficient credit in easy terms might improve the marketing situation of groundnut.

Objectives:

(1) To study the marketing channel of groundnut,

(2) To estimate costs and marginal of the actors involved in groundnut marketing, and

(3) To identify the problems faced by the groundnut producer, farmers and traders and to suggest some remedial measures.

Methodology:

Char areas of Manikgonj district are suitable for groundnut production. The selection of market at different stages of marketing was brought under investigation by collecting necessary data. Two adjacent thanas, viz. Harirampup and Shibalaya under Manikgonj district were selected purposively for conducting the study. A total of five villages, three from Harirampur thana and two from Shibalaya thana were selected purposively from the study area, and out of them, 34 farmers were interviewed to estimate the cost of production of groundnut. The traders were grouped into farias, beparis, aratders and retailers. Sixteen farias, 16 beparis, 10 aratders and 12 retailers were selected randomly from the 90 traders selected earlier. Primary data were collected during October-November of 1997 through an interview schedule. Tabular method was used for data analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

On the basis of the findings of the study, following recommendations have been made for the improvement of the existing production and marketing system of groundnut. 1. Institutional credit facilities should be extended to the groundnut traders so that they would be able to run their business effectively which is essential for the smooth operation of the marketing system. 2. Adequate and timely availability of groundnut seeds should be ensured for improvement of both the production and marketing of groundnut. 3. Steps should be taken through proper planning by concerned authorities to reduce instability of groundnut price. Price stability of groundnut will credit a favorable and profitable condition for the farmers and traders.
