Studies on the Physico-mechanical Properties of Blended Jute Yarn and Fabrics

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To extend jute fibre in textile field, chemically modified jute fibre has been successfully blended with cotton, nylon, polypropylene & polynitrile. The study was conducted at Chemistry Division and JTPDC, Bangladesh Jute Research Institute during 2003 and 2004. Fine yarn and light weight fabric were prepared from the blended jute fibre which showed improved physico-mechanical properties to increase market potentiality of jute fibre in comparison with 100% cotton sample.

Objectives:

To prepare blended fine yarn of modified jute fibre with Cotton, Nylon, Polypropylene (PP) and polynitrile (PN) for the production of lightweight jute fabric in comparison with 100% cotton samples.

Methodology:

Modified (sulphonated) jute fibre, Cotton fibre, Nylon, Polypropylene and Polynitrile were collected from different reliable sources. The study was conducted at Chemistry Division and JTPDC, Bangladesh Jute Research Institute during 2003 and 2004. Experimental samples were jute blended fine yarn (205 cotton count/30 tex) and light weight jute fabrics. About 15 gm of jute fibre were taken in a glass tube and 75 ml of the sulphite liquor was poured into the glass tube in such a way that no air bubbles remained stuck inside the fibre mass. The sulphite liquor was prepared by dissolving the measured amount of sodium sulphite or bi-sulphite with or without sodium carbonate or hydroxide. The glass tube with the contents inside was sealed at the open end and was then placed inside an autoclave which was rotated two times a minute. The temperature was raised up to 165°C and kept constant for a definite period of time. The fibre sample thus sulphonated was washed several times alternatively with hot or cold water and dried in air. Chemically modified jute staples were blended with cotton, nylon, polypropylene (PP) and poly nitrile (PN) fibres in the ratio of 50/50 and 65/35. Jute blended yarns were prepared by passing the blended fibre through blow room process and other mechanical processing of cotton spinning system. Reference yarn samples using 100% jute (original and modified) and 100% cotton were also prepared separately for comparative studies on the properties of blended yarns. Some of the Physico-mechanical properties of blended yarns, such as count/ Tex, count strength products (CSP), tensile properties were measured as per the standard procedure. The specimen fabrics from the blended yarns were prepared using handloom. The set of warp and weft yarns of same count was done on the one up and one down principle followed for weaving plain cloths. Some of the fabric properties, such as cloth cover, stiffness and flexural rigidity, strength, drape co-efficient etc were evaluated with 100% cotton fabrics of same specification.

Achievement/Findings:

Blending of modified jute fibre with other fibres is a development to improve the quality of jute-based products with cotton. Improvements of physico-chemical & physico- mechanical properties of chemically modified jute fibre have been investigated by measurement of compositional change, structural change, tensile properties & stress-train characteristics. On the basis of improved properties of jute fibre, fine yarn and lightweight fabric can be made comparing with cotton textile.
