Physical and Mechanical Properties of Sundri (heritiera Fomes) and Baen (avicenia Alba)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Physical and mechanical properties of Sundri (Heritiera fomes) and Baen (Avicenia alba) were studied. Sundri is a heavy wood possessing very high strength properties and baen is categorized as a moderately heavy wood having moderate strength.Sundri is thus recommended for use as poles, posts, construction and other uses requiring very heavy and strong timber. Baen may serve the purpose where timbers of moderately heavy, moderately strong and medium density are required.

Objectives:

A good number of mangrove species is grown in the swamps of the Sundarbans and other coastal areas of Bangladesh. Among others sundri (Heritiera fomes) and Baen (Avicenia alba) are two important species which constitute about 74.2 and 7.2 per cent respectively of the total population of the Sundarbans. The physical and mechanical properties of these species have not yet been thorough investigated. The present study was done to furnish these information’s in order to ensure their economic utilization.

Methodology:

Three representative trees of average girth of each species were collected from the Sundarbans Reserved Forests of Khulna. Three samples per bole were selected randomly from each of the three consecutive 2.50 m bolts above the stump height of each tree. All the bolts were fairly straight and free from natural defects.

Top ends of all the bolts were marked into 6.35 cm squares with respect to tree, bolt and stick and then sawn to 6.35 cm x 6.35 cm x2.50 m sticks. The sticks were prepared in pairs. From each pair, one stick was taken for conducting tests in green condition and the other in airdry condition. The sticks for air dry tests were stacked in the conventional way inside a drying shed and allowed to airdry for a period till they reached about 12 per cent moisture content.All the sticks were dressed to 5.08 cm x 5.08 cm x 2.50 m strips. Clear specimens were prepared from these strips according to the size specified by the ASTM standards D 143-52. The cross-sectional dimensions and length of each species were measured to the nearest 0.0254 cm.All the specimens were tested in accordance with the specifications of the ASTM. Except for toughness, all mechanical tests were carried out in the screw power type Universal Riehle Testing Machine. Toughness tests were performed in a Toughness Testing Machine designed by the Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wisconsin.

The following conclusions may be drawn :

Sundri is a heavy wood possessing very high strength properties and baen is categorized as a moderately heavy wood having moderate strength.Sundri is heavier and stronger than teak in almost all properties whereas baen is weaker than teak and sundri.The mechanical properties of sundri conform to the specification of group A transmission poles.Sundri is thus recommended for use as poles, posts, construction and other uses requiring very heavy and strong timber. Baen may serve the purpose where timbers of moderately heavy, moderately strong and medium density are required.
